We were lucky to catch up with Clancy Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Clancy, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally was when I was 9 years old. One day, I stumbled across a tape of Bel Biv Devoe. I loved the infusion of soul, hip/hop, slow groves and harmonization. I would listen to the album titled, “Poison” (sides A&B) religiously, rewinding, fast forwarding, pausing, learning every lyric, and using whatever I could find as a prop mic. I would perform along with the album for hours in a small mirror, mimicking what I imagined BBD would be doing on stage. I didn’t grow up with MTV, let alone cable TV. It was all my perception of the sound and lyrics.
This year I’m releasing my second album “Found My Way” and I feel I’m just tapping into my musical path. My goal is to continue to grow as a songwriter and keep developing a unique blend of sound.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Clancy Jones. I’m a singer songwriter from South East Texas (High Island, Texas). I got into the music industry after many years of hard work as a boilermaker in the oil and gas industry. It was a dirty, gritty and dangerous profession. I enjoyed the camaraderie with my work partners but I was just missing something in my life and it was music. I spent many late nights playing and writing songs in motels in California & Texas dreaming of one day hanging up my tool bag for a life of traveling and playing my songs live.
My brand of music leans heavily on the blue collar roots of Americana or basically the highs and lows of everyday life. What sets me apart from others, I think, is that I don’t really pigeonhole myself with a specific genre or title of music. I haven’t been categorized into one style of sound which gives me freedom with my creative process. It’s simple, Clancy Jones Music is Clancy Jones Music.
I’m most proud of where I came from, all the places I have been, and how I have gotten to where I am today. I’ve been fortunate enough to live out my dream of playing and recording music. I have a great team of support and I enjoy meeting interesting people/fans that love what I’m creating sonically.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is connecting with fans over my lyrics, sound, live performance, and just everyday conversation. You never know how your music/art will relate to people unless you put it out there, and that’s most important to me. I hope each time I get on stage or release new music that I can impact someone’s life on a positive note. That’s the greatest accomplishment for me.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience over the years through social media by creating professional content – photos, videos, and copy. I don’t get too personal or “in my feelings” on my social platforms. It’s really easy to be misread or misunderstand with words so I like to conduct my social platform like a business.
The advice I’d give to those just starting out would be to keep your content professional, interactive, positive, and authentic.
