Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Faustinus Deraet. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Faustinus, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
In my case it was meant to be, when I moved to Austin I realized the city has its name embedded in mine: Faustinus.
My name starts with an “F” (Aperture letter in Photography, and/or sound of F as in photography), “AUSTIN” (Capital of Texas) &
“US” (United States abreviation or Pronoun):
F AUSTIN US

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I consider myself a Portrait, Documentary and Fine art photographer. I was born in Antwerp (Belgium), I grew up in Mexico City and moved to Austin. While working for IBM Mexico, I went back to school and studied photography. Opened a photographic studio in Mexico and a few years later I moved to Austin and continued my carrer as a photographer.
Besides doing photography I also work as a Teaching Artist at a non-profit called Creative Action. I enjoy planting the seed of photography in the minds and hearts of my young students.
To me, photography is more than just a medium of expression. It helps me discover more about myself and others. People say “A picture is worth thousand words”, to me, it’s also worth a thousand feelings and a thousand memories.
As a photographer I can share my vision. It’s amazing to collaborate with customers to transform their ideas into images and it’s an honor to be part of museums and private collectors. Currently I am represented by Davis Gallery in Austin, Texas and 4th Street Gallery in Blanco, Texas.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I divide my photography in two main areas, Commercial and Fine art photography. Commercially speaking the best reward is having a happy customer and establishing a professional and loyal relation.
With my Fine art photography, I’ve been rewarded by having my work exhibited and adquired by several private collectors. My work is part of Mexic-Arte Museum and The Wittliff’s Collections.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth and relations… there is nothing more powerful than being recommended.
