We were lucky to catch up with Denton Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Denton , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an artist and a creative, we help shape the world with our projects. We have a responsibility to inspire and encourage through the performing arts. I know for me personally and professionally growing up in our nation’s Capitol, seeing performances at The Kennedy Center, AMC Theaters, and local events helped shape me to being the artist I am today. For me, meaningful bodies of work are essential to developing as a creator in this world. It’s more than just entertainment for me; original programming is much more. The world has so much to choose from nowadays, and because there’s so much content without purpose, there is much desire to see more value in the products they indulge in.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My birth name is Adam Denton Smith, and I chose my pen name (Denton Adams) in my senior year of film school at the University North Carolina School of the Arts – School of Filmmaking (NCSA when I attended). A native of Washington, DC, I’ve been writing since age four and wanted to make films since age eleven. I’ve grown into my artistry independently and found joy in creating inspirational content. As the President of Heartfelt Pictures, a production company that tells stories from the heart for the heart, I aim to tell wholesome and inspirational stories to evoke change and thoughts that will inspire audiences worldwide.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is discovering my company’s produced work’s impact on audience members. It’s encouraging to get feedback and constructive criticism and identify the elements from characters, themes, plots, and more that moved someone. As a filmmaker, nothing is better than hearing stories’ positive influence on audience members and how they relate to a character or storyline. “Art reflects life, and life reflects art” sums up why being creative is so rewarding.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being an independent filmmaker, not backed by a studio currently or represented by an agency, I’ve found that being confident in my approach to telling the stories God gives me to create and that I want to tell are unique and valuable to my maturity and growth as a creative. Furthermore, during the pandemic, I brought together seven other creatives, four Queens and four Kings, to make an anthology feature film entitled 00:08:46 as a protest film in response to the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, and George Floyd. Through every obstacle and adversity, my leadership, and having a great team, we accomplished something many didn’t think was possible. An independent film of this magnitude was the first of its kind, yet we succeeded, and being resilient was necessary to complete the mission. Our film has recently been acquired and will be released next month.
