Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mary Chapman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
As an artist in their 20s, most people like to believe that creativity and imagination ends at 18. You’re not allowed to have fun, be creative, dress up, dance, act, wear costumes or anything from your childhood after you’re an adult. That’s entirely false. Every big actor in the industry shares the stories of how they dreamed, believed, imagined and played roles through their whole lives and never lost their inner child. After all, being an actor involves playing a character, thus, wearing costumes and playing. It’s very important that we as creatives encourage those who are different and stand out. Those who don’t follow the norms. Those who reach deep inside their souls for their inner child to pull them to the surface.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a cosplayer, actor, voice impressionist, makeup artist and sketch artist. I have a BA in theatre. I swore I would pursue my dreams of being a creative from the young age of 5. I’ve created comics, art pieces and voiceover for independent creators as well as acted as a zombie, villain, and leads in independent films and shows. I am also a creator on tiktok and Instagram. I experiment with several styles of acting ranging from tiktok, Disney, Pixar, claymation, movie, tv show, comedy and many other genres. Imitation is my favorite to do. That’s why cosplaying is so fascinating to me. I am simply imitating an actor and their character. I’m well known for my SpongeBob and Eddie Kaspbrak cosplays as well as Stranger Things and Marvel. I find it very important to stay connected with my faith as well. This means being in tune with my soul, God and loving every human I come in contact with. Human interaction is the most beautiful gift we were ever given. I find myself to be very blessed to impact so many lives with my acting and creativity.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
As a creator who started in the uprising of cosplayers on tiktok, this hits close to home. Cosplay and acting was very big on social media at around 2016-2019. I have seen recently my peers and I being less and less supported for our creativities. A lot of work goes into cosplay from movements, acting style, makeup, sewing, painting and much more. I believe it would be beneficial if there were social media apps for communities of creatives to be able to meet up and share their stories and indulge in creativity together.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal in life is to positively impact young people and struggling people. I have been through a very hard life and find it a blessing now that I can relate to those who struggle around me. I wish to spread love and positivity to all those around me. I hope to reach a wider community and helping more and more people along the way.
