We were lucky to catch up with Raphaela Moraes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Raphaela thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes. I am happy when I’m working with creative and specially intricate jobs. I do, however, wonder how it would be to have a regular job. Sometimes I imagine myself working as a café barista or maybe at a dog daycare. Being a freelancer can be stressful and the worry about not getting a client at some point can really cause anxiety, so those are the moments that I mostly wonder how it would be to have a part-time job in something that doesn’t require much of my creative skills and give me more human (or dog) interaction. If given the opportunity to work in a dog daycare or in a nice café, I would probably try to balance that with my creative works as a designer.

Raphaela, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Raphaela, I am 23 years old and my main focus right now is my career as a graphic designer. You can count on me for minimalistic, colorful and vectorial designs! I am an artist with a focus on motion design, packaging, and illustration. I have experience designing for education and technology companies, which led me to develop a strong skill set in creating effective branding strategies for a diverse range of professionals.
I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication, with an emphasis on Publicity and Advertising, from Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) in Niterói, Brazil, in 2022. Currently, I am pursuing my MFA in Graphic Design at ArtCenter College of Design in California, where I am deepening my expertise in designing for digital and print media.
I am passionate about creating visually compelling designs that communicate effectively and engage audiences. I thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working closely with clients to understand their needs and deliver innovative design solutions. I also really enjoy hand-craft, such as book binding, archetype press and printing.
At the moment, I’m working as a freelance designer.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal right now is to establish myself as a freelancer, being able to keep a nice frequency of clients. I am also planning and organizing how to grow my online presence, in spaces such as Instagram and TikTok so I can work on my personal brand and create my own products, such as t-shirts, prints and stickers. I really enjoy costumer interaction and work with sales, I find really rewarding every time I am able to sell something and I wish to make it something recurring for my business.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to see my ideas coming to life. Having ideas is great, super fun, but making the idea work, having to problem-solve during the process, mix with other ideas to make something bigger and, finally, seeing the final result is what brings me the most joy in the process. I have a lot of fun problem-solving in my process. Ideas are great but they are not always complete or things don’t go as planned, so being able to think of fast solution and pivots and having a nice outcome is extremely rewarding to me.
