We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kiuyan Ran. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kiuyan below.
Hi Kiuyan, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Yes, I still believe that working in the art industry is the most joyful job. Creativity is one of the most valuable and intriguing aspects of being human, and being able to work in this field is still one of my most fitting choices. Actually, it’s difficult to define what is “ordinary,” but for me, any job outside of the realm of creativity feels “ordinary.” My mind is solely focused on contemplating creation and art, and it fills me with excitement as I gradually grasp certain truths throughout the process. Other jobs always make me feel mundane, while creation encourages the pursuit of new possibilities.

Kiuyan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an artist specializes in illustration, concept design and art directing for games, books, theaters and more. I was born in Chongqing, China, based in New York City, U.S. Currently working as concept art outsource supervisor at Blizzard Entertainment, Diablo IV.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Art has the power to evoke emotions and touch my life. I often find fulfillment in knowing that my work resonates with others and creates a connection or dialogue. It bridge gaps and foster a sense of shared understanding and empathy. I derive great satisfaction from understanding the creations of others and from having my own creations understood. Also, the creative process itself can be deeply enriching and transformative. Constantly pushing my boundaries, experiment with new techniques, and explore different ideas. This continuous growth and the sense of achievement and seeing my work evolve can bring a great sense of fulfillment.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Creatives are driven by an unyielding spirit of growth and self-discovery, often underestimated by others in terms of the time it requires. They understand that artistic development is a continuous journey that demands dedicated time and effort. Non-creatives may overlook the significant investment of time needed for this kind of exploration. Artists willingly devote countless hours to honing their craft, experimenting with different techniques, and immersing themselves in the creative process. The depth of time commitment necessary for this ongoing discovery is a fundamental aspect that can be easily underestimated by those outside the creative realm.
