We recently connected with Damien March and have shared our conversation below.
Damien, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Since my school days I always knew I had a talent in the visual arts. My friends in school used to get a great laugh at the characters I drew especially of the teachers, I was often reprimanded in class for “wasting” time drawing. My teachers used to say this drawing during class is wasting time and it will never get you anywhere. After secondary school I got accepted into Fine Arts at Monash University and it was here that I really flourished and fell in love with creating and being around like minded visual artists. On completion of my Fine Arts degree I always wanted to travel and live abroad. I headed to London and it was here that I worked at various Galleries like the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and did some small exhibitions. After 7 years in London and getting married and having two amazing boys, my visual arts career stagnated and I was no longer creating. Whilst life was good, I felt a void or something was missing. My life changed around 2016, Dad was diagnosed with dementia and had to be placed in a home, not that long after Mum had a severe stroke and became incapacitated and was also placed in the same home. I saw the fragility of life first hand, and began to question what life is about. It was during this period that I found my passion for creating again, starting by just doing some drawings then getting back into painting. This led to my first exhibition at Federation Square in Melbourne and I sold out. I was now off and running as a visual artist, I felt complete and that I had found my destiny . Since then I have had thirteen solo shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It has been an amazing ride and I have built up a following and reputation in the art world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My business is simply called Damien March, it specialises in unique one of a kind mixed media artworks. It has been in operation now for over 6 years and I have sold hundreds of paintings all across the globe. All Damien March artworks are one off orignial creations and are unavailable in print format. This accentuates the exclusivity and freshness of each indiviual piece. The works are created in mixed media ranging from acrylic, sand , ink and resin. Mixed media creates a textured aesthetic that can only be accomplished through this range of media. Glistening resin is often be juxtaposed against rough textured palette knife gestures. The canvas surface has a dynamic, unique aesthetic often creating a push pull effect and a sense of grandeur. I am most proud of the locations my work has found itself into. Such locations as the conference room of Rodeo Reality, the houses of real-estate agents Matt Altman and Josh Flagg, Beverly Hills City Hall, Castle Rock pictures, Thunder Road pictures, and various galleries around the world. However I am most proud of being able to do what I love and enjoy the whole creative process to finalizing exhibitions and venues. I often pinch myself to think that I actually get paid to do something I really love. I have some major commission work occurring soon in Arizona which I am very excited about. None of this would be possible without the love and support of my beautiful partner Laura and my two boys Ethan and James.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a tool that I use extensively to gain support and recognizability of my brand and style of art. I firmly believe that building up the audience takes time and it cannot happen over night. Through each exhibition or each post my audience has slowly grown. Luckily with visual arts for me its all been about locations and getting my work seen. From this more people recognize my work and follow through social media. Whilst social media is an essential platform it can never take away from seeing my work in the flesh. I believe my art like all art should be seen in real life to gain a full aesthetic appreciation of the scale, tones, textures and techniques of the individual pieces.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe everyone should have unique art in their homes. If people did this it would greatly support the creative industry. Buying art is an investment and to everyone who owns an original Damien March painting I keep on trying my best to grow and re invest back into the business. This has already seen my prices escalate over the years and hopefully continue to do so. What many people don’t realize is that with art it has taken many years of precising and failing, what you see has many more hours of work behind it. So please go out and support any artist whether big or emerging, it will be a great investment and will give you years of visual pleasure.
