Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Dickinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenges we face in the photography community to profit is being undercut by beginner or hobby photographers.

1. The notion that photographers will often photograph free for access to events and/or to build their portfolios makes it more challenging to charge what us professionals are worth can drive down sales.

2. As photography becomes more accessible to the public over saturates the market and drives down demand. What I love about sports photography is that it’s almost impossible to get good sports photos with a cell phone.

3. The cost of new cameras and gear are progressively getting more expensive and as cameras get better, the harder it is to set yourself apart from others which accelerates demand to stay one step ahead of your competition. The constant purchasing of new gear lowers the ability to stay profitable.

Justin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Justin Dickinson, a us military veteran, and am the owner and principal photographer of MyJdProductions. We are a photography company that specializes in sports and portraits photography.

I got into the business by beginning to photograph my sons football team. All the parents offered to pay for my photos and I knew then, I had the ability to sell my services and could be successful.

My next client PPT Elite, owned by former NFL player Jordan Pugh brought me on and I have since branched out to other select teams, schools, and began photographing other unrelated genres such as weddings, school photos, and products.

There are many things that set us apart from our competition. We strive for high quality photos while delivering them faster than our competitors. A lot of times we deliver same or next day..

The thing that makes me so proud of what I have accomplished is the growth I have seen over the years and the smiles I have put on peoples faces when I capture an awesome photo of someone.

I want everyone to know that Myjdproductions may not be the cheapest in town but our attention to detail and passion for what we do is unmatched.

Chris Simmons is almost recently brought on as a principal photographer. He was brought on from a workshop I ran to teach new and upcoming sports photographers. The workshop each year takes place at the Bret Cooper All American Game. The Bret Cooper All American Game Workshop makes for the perfect opportunity for sports photographers as the best kids from all over the world come to this event. Over 30 kids and counting have made it to the NFL thus far.

Have you ever had to pivot?

Recently, I have pivoted my business model to individually charging kids for my popular “NFL Style Dramatic Portraits” instead of charging an hourly price for the whole shoot. It has brought about new challenges and has me searching for the best solutions to optimize my business workflow.
