Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shae Foote. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Shae, thanks for joining us today. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
When I was first starting out, I created my own artist development/promotions/marketing company/record label. I dissolved the company after the first year due to lack of knowledge, and I was way over my head trying to juggle multiple roles within the company. Two years later, another music executive and I teamed up to create a full service marketing and promotions company that was in business from 2008-2014. Partnering was a great choice at the time because we were able to focus on our niche strengths which also complemented our not-so-strong points. I was able to travel and create events, while she stayed in the office to complete the paperwork side. There are a lot of roles in the music industry that require multiple hats but it’s always vital to master at least one skill. If given the option to repeat, I would love to have the opportunity to work for a more established firm than to be an autodidact but I appreciate the long days in the library, and driving hours to attend seminars. It developed the hustle in me

Shae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Shae Foote; Mother, Publicist, Radio Promotions Specialist and football enthusiast. In March 2023, I celebrated my 15th year anniversary of being in the music industry. I was introduced to the industry by rapping and producing with my friends, which evolved into street team work, radio sales and promotion and finally into my passion of Public Relations. As a Publicist, I provide brand awareness opportunities for my clients. Those opportunities include but are not limited to tv and radio interviews, blogs, websites and product placements, crisis prevention and management and all duties to maintain the positive publicity for my clients. I currently represent recording artist, athletes and small business professionals. What I’m most proud of in my career was my ability to find my passion as a teenager and to take advantage of many opportunities to become an autodidactic person. I spent a lot out time and money teaching myself, attending seminars and studying to compete in a thriving industry when my peers took the traditional role in college.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience has been apart of my entire journey. The music and entertainment industry is an extremely slow-paying and low-paying profession in the beginning, even though it’s portrayed as fast and flashy. Multiple times throughout my career, I was homeless and broke while still required to attend events, provide services and maintain the image of my clients. I met deadlines while using free Wi-Fi at local hotels, restaurants and breweries. After the birth of my son at 26yrs old, I took a break for a year and devised a plan to control my own destiny. I worked a lot of typical 9-5 and odd jobs to provide for my family and used every waking moment to build my own company. I started on my journey at 15, when my mother kicked me out of the house, created my first business at 20 and it amazes me daily how at 35 years young, I’m living the life I use to dream of. I’m blessed beyond measures.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe three factors helped me build my reputation within my market. 1) Staying consistent, 2) Moving around and 3). Being transparent. Born in Brooklyn, NY, I moved back and forth between NYC and NC frequently. Each time I bought innovative ideas and events to areas, especially before the launch of social media. North Carolina is unique compared to a lot of other markets, as it has completely diverse markets within a relatively small radius. With 100 countries, 85 colleges and over 700 radio stations, I have lived in 3 of the 5 major markets in the state. I am familiar with the city and countryside and bill rapport with each community while not falling to the urge of glitz and glamour that comes along with the industry’s agenda. My faith in God allows me to be true to who I am and display my highs and lows when necessary.
