We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Phonixx a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
For me I never saw it as earning a living. I always saw it by doing what I loved and money will come later. It is still a wild ride for me, as I continue to help touch peoples lives with just music, seeing peoples smiles, seeing their happiness makes me truly happy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I now produce and DJ. I even , with the help of my amazing friends, topshot events, eclipse entertainment came to Texas and threw a one day music festival in under a month. The most stressful time of my life but, when we pulled it off. Wow it was amazing. The things that set me apart are just my resilience to be better every day. I guess what we are most proud of is the ability to pull of things people say I cant do. Over and over again. The better i have become the bigger artists i have been able to work with, which leads to bigger opportunities.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I won’t go into too much backstory, but don’t feel bad about becoming who you are supposed to be. There’s no shame in leaving people behind no shame in stepping into what you are destined to do. The other thing I had to unlearn is not everyone you meet will have your drive and ambition and that is OKAY.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly, people going crazy to things you made for them. The work i do is high risk high reward being a artist now and playing huge stages and now festivals, is a lot different but it makes you work harder for every ounce of energy the crowd gives you and the love you receive back makes it all worth it.
