Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kenny Lam. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kenny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
For the past year I wrote, acted, and produced my own 7 minute short film where we ran into issues during the post production process. We used three different CFast memory cards for our footage, however the files on one of the cards ended up being corrupted so we lost the footage for master shot, POV shot, as well as the establishing shot. We couldn’t reshoot the POV or the master as I had already dyed my hair a different color for another project I was acting in. I was very heartbroken and disappointed as all that hard work just went down the drain it felt like. However, things like this happen all the time and I’m not alone in it.
What we ended up doing to fix the issue was reshoot the establishing shot and we pieced together the rest of the footage we did have and made the scene work. It’s not a replacement of what we shot before but it’s the best we were able to come up with last minute.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Started 5 years ago during my undergrad at Buffalo State College. I originally was majoring in Computer Information Systems but I took theater history as an elective and it re-sparked my interest in acting. I ended up taking theater as a minor and during my time at Buffalo State College one of my professors convinced me to audition for URTA’s where I ended up studying at Oklahoma City University, where I recently graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Screen Acting. During my time in grad school I started working for Central Casting while auditioning for commercials through my agent from ABA Talent. While I’m mainly an Actor, I am also a Writer, Producer, Cinematographer, Teleprompter Operator, Voice Over Actor, MoCap Actor, as well as Post Production Editing. I’m most proud of being able to be flexible and having both knowledge/experience in different fields on the Entertainment Industry.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve been attending grad school for the past two years. I recently just graduated with my MFA in Screen Acting. What most people don’t know though is that I’ve been homeless since June of 2022. I was fortunate enough to have good friends that let me couch surf until the Veteran’s Affairs stepped in and helped me get into transitional housing. Currently I’m staying at a US Vets Community Center in Inglewood but I’m proud to say that I’m at the end of this chapter of my life as I’m moving into my own apartment before the end of the month.
I could’ve taken the easy way out and moved back to Buffalo where I could’ve lived with my parents, but my career is out here in LA. I had to make the tough decision of sticking through the hard times and the sad times, but there were also plenty of positive moments throughout this year of being homeless.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Audiences stop jumping to conclusions base on accusations. Instead support your artists until proven guilty.
