Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bhroovi Gupta. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Bhroovi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Leaving behind the familiarity of India, I embarked on a daring adventure that would change the course of my life. The risk I took was to journey to America, a land filled with opportunities and uncertainties, with the sole purpose of pursuing a career in graphic design.
The backstory begins with my unwavering passion for art and design, which blossomed during my formative years in India. I honed my skills, immersing myself in the world of visual aesthetics, and dreaming of the day when my creativity would come to life on a global scale. As I delved deeper into the realm of graphic design, I realized that America held boundless possibilities for professional growth and artistic expression.
The decision to leave my homeland was not an easy one. It meant bidding farewell to my family, friends, and the comforting familiarity of my culture. Moreover, the prospect of starting afresh in a foreign land, where I knew no one, was both exhilarating and daunting. Nevertheless, fueled by my determination to chase my dreams, I took the leap of faith.
Arriving in America, I was greeted by a whirlwind of sensations—towering skyscrapers, bustling streets, and a cacophony of diverse voices. It was both overwhelming and awe-inspiring. I faced the challenges head-on, navigating through the labyrinth of a new society, language, and customs.
With a heart filled with hope, I embarked on my journey to establish myself in the graphic design industry. I tirelessly searched for job opportunities, attended networking events, and showcased my portfolio to potential employers. The initial months were arduous, however, I refused to succumb to self-doubt and persevered in my quest.
Slowly but steadily, my tenacity and talent began to bear fruit. I landed my first internship, alongside pursuing my degree at KU. This triumph fueled my confidence and propelled me forward. Word-of-mouth referrals and positive client feedback soon followed, gradually expanding my network and opening doors to new opportunities.
Over time, I became a part of the vibrant graphic design community in America. I collaborated with talented artists, participated in design competitions, and attended industry conferences. These experiences not only enriched my creative repertoire but also broadened my horizons by exposing me to diverse perspectives and approaches.
Looking back, I can proudly say that taking the risk to come to America was a defining moment in my life. It was a decision that demanded resilience, adaptability, and unwavering belief in my abilities. Today, as I reflect upon my journey, I stand as a testament to the rewards of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and pursuing one’s passion with unwavering determination.
America has become my second home—a place where I have flourished both professionally and personally. The risk I took to leave behind the familiar and embrace the unknown has borne fruit beyond my wildest dreams. I have started towards a successful career in graphic design, working on projects that inspire me and collaborating with talented individuals who share my creative vision.
While challenges continue to arise, I face them with the wisdom and resilience gained through my journey. The risk I took has transformed into a life-changing opportunity, offering me a fulfilling career, cultural enrichment, and a profound sense of accomplishment. I am grateful for the courage to pursue my dreams and for the incredible journey that continues to unfold before me.
Bhroovi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Bhroovi Gupta, a graphic, UI/UX, and motion designer with a deep passion for technology and interactive experiences. Originally from Mumbai, I started my design journey at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India. Later, I transferred to the University of Kansas to complete my BFA in Visual Communication Design. My fascination with design stemmed from the realization of its power to captivate and evoke emotions within others. I discovered that I could create something that grabs attention and generates excitement—an ability I couldn’t ignore. I began exploring the broad landscape of design, realizing its potential to shape the way people perceive and interact with the world.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of gaining diverse experiences in the design industry. I’ve worked as a UI/UX designer at WiX.com, delving into the world of user-centered design and crafting intuitive digital experiences, at Whiskey Design, an award-winning studio based in Kansas City working on brand experiences, exploring the realms of packaging, digital design, and motion graphics and many others like VMLY&R and University of Kansas – Marketing Communications.
Currently, I work at Native Digital as a Visual Designer. In my creative work, I often place typography at the forefront, embracing its expressive power. Coupled with my skills in motion design, I strive to create interactive experiences that are not only visually appealing but also enhance user engagement and usability. Whether I’m designing visual identity systems, sustainable packaging, or UX/UI for mobile apps, I aim to surprise, delight, and provoke emotions in users.
Nature and biomimicry are significant sources of inspiration for me. I find beauty and innovative solutions in the patterns and processes found in the natural world. Documentaries on the National Geographic Channel serve as a catalyst for my imagination, sparking new ideas and approaches to design.
One project I’m particularly proud of is “Soak,” a rebranding and packaging experience for a kitchen sponge with a focus on sustainability. In our disposable culture, environmental considerations are often overlooked. For this project, I paid careful attention to packaging principles, incorporating protection, concept communication, and an extension of the user experience. The result was a package design made of 100% compostable cornstarch paper and soy inks, aiming to be virtually “invisible” in today’s environment.
What sets me apart as a designer is my bold approach, attention to detail, and ability to merge aesthetics with functionality. I believe in creating designs that not only look visually striking but also serve a purpose and effectively communicate the intended message. My multidisciplinary background and passion for technology allow me to approach projects from various angles, ensuring a holistic and innovative design solution.
To potential clients, I want them to know that I am deeply committed to delivering exceptional design experiences. I strive to understand their unique needs and objectives, working collaboratively to bring their visions to life. With a focus on user-centric design, sustainability, and pushing creative boundaries, I aim to exceed expectations and create memorable experiences.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Throughout my journey, resilience has been a constant companion, guiding me through challenges and empowering me to persevere. One particular story that exemplifies my resilience revolves around the hurdles I faced in securing sponsorship for an H1B visa after graduating from the University of Kansas.
Upon completing my studies, I was eager to launch my career and contribute my skills and passion to the design industry. However, being an international student, I faced unique obstacles due to the complexities surrounding work visas. Many employers were unfamiliar with the sponsorship process or hesitant to invest in sponsoring an H1B visa for a recent graduate.
The lack of awareness and understanding about the visa sponsorship process meant that I encountered numerous rejections and missed opportunities. It was disheartening to be turned away from positions I was well-suited for simply because of visa-related restrictions. I knew that my talent and capabilities were being overlooked, and it was a challenging situation to navigate.
However, I refused to let these setbacks define my journey. I was determined to overcome the obstacles in my path and forge a successful career in graphic design. I channeled my disappointment and frustration into redoubling my efforts to showcase my skills and prove my worth to potential employers.
I continued to produce exceptional work, consistently pushing the boundaries of my creativity and delivering results that exceeded expectations. Despite the limitations imposed by my visa status, I strived to make a positive impact in every project I undertook.
