We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shameka Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shameka, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I’ve had many defining moments in my life that were often overshadowed by trauma. I’m learning to lean more into my happiness and revisiting those impactful moments.
My memory is shifting me back to the moment I was recognized on Bet Soul Train Awards for my work in the community under my nonprofit, Emma’s House Inc.
About two weeks prior to receiving the email, I had received some unsettling news that changed the trajectory of my life. When I received the email from BET, I surely thought it was a joke. There was no way I was receiving such a high honor at what felt like such a low moment in my life.
It was indeed real and an unforgettable moment. That moment was a reminder of why I do the work that I do. If I give up, I’m giving up on the people that are connected to me. My “yes” has a purpose.
Shameka, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve often been asked “How did you get into the field of therapy?” My answer is always that the field chose me. It’s more of a calling versus a job.
My own traumatic life as a kid was filled with so much loss, grief, trauma and disappointments. A kid from Detroit that had one murdered parent and another one in prison was not supposed to be a success story. Yet, here I am! I’m walking on a journey with each client to help them heal and reach a level beyond their expectations.
My brand, my business, my joy is Emma’s House Inc. It’s a safe space to help women and children heal from trauma and grief. A place where people feel comfortable enough to speak on hidden pain that’s been buried for years. In the therapy room is where I provide them with HOPE.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation is built on honesty and transparency. I’m very open about my life (the struggles and the triumphs).
I’m not in the business of marketing for clients. I’m sharing my story in hopes that someone will listen and become inspired.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a Marriage & Family Therapist, my thinking was always linear. I believed therapy and healing only happened in the therapy room. No one told me I could use my gift in many different settings. It was not until I was presented with an opportunity to teach at a University that my thinking shifted.
I started to open my eyes to speaking on large platforms. I have been blessed to create podcasts, executive produce projects for healing trauma within the family system and writing International Best Selling Books.
