We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Trevis T.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Trevis below.
Trevis , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Being misunderstood is a part of being a creative. Everyone may not see your vision the same way that you see it. In my time as a music producer and rapper I have experienced this in many ways.
Some people have tried to use one of my songs to define my entire catalog of music.I have been misquoted, labeled and misinterpreted. In the beginning of my career this bothered me and I wanted to be understood by everyone.
For example I write songs in English and Spanish. When I first started writing songs in Spanish people approached me and asked ” So you only make Spanish music now ?” Then when I made a song called “Don’t Shoot The Messenger ” I got dms on IG asking why would I attack certain groups of people even though the song didn’t attack anyone. I saw then that the public has a narrow view of independent artist and expect indie artist to have one skillset which can lead to the misunderstanding of an artist’s intent, purpose and creativity.
The more I create the more being understood doesn’t matter as much now because those who are suppose to understand me will.
My job is to continue to create meaningful art and focus on the people that truly understand my music and welcome people who would like to learn to understand my art with open arms.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My passion for creating music lead me to the music industry. I went from playing in the band in high school to making my own beats and composing songs. for film and television.
Today I continue to create original songs and provide music for film, television, and commercials. As an artist and songwriter I’m creating a new project and preparing to tour again soon.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea of “It’s not what you know it’s who you know ” in the music industry. As a child and teenager I heard this often. As I grew and developed my skills and experience I recognized that the saying should say ” Be the person that other people want to know”.
Essentially you should create value so you can be useful and helpful to those around you that you want to network with. Just knowing the right people doesn’t mean anything if you’re not prepared for your success. Today I remain in student mode ready to learn more to become more valuable to everyone I work with.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to see an idea in my head come to life ,and then being able to see that idea encourage, inspire or help someone feel great. The right words and the right melodies have the ability to change someones mood instantly. That’s incredible.
