Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Ortiz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I first came up with the idea of a spray on sunscreen that was chemical free, easy to use and that was good for the environment when I was trying to find one to use on my toddler. Everything I found was either full of chemicals and bad for Mother Nature or if it had clean ingredients it left the skin looking like Casper the ghost with a white film on the skin.
I was constantly purchasing “good clean” sunscreens and was disappointed with them. They were thick, pasty and took forever to rub in, which made it super hard to get on a wiggling toddler.
After talking to countless mamma’s who were having the same issues and problems with mineral sunscreens, I knew there was a need for something unique and different. We all wanted a physical blocking sunscreen that was easy to use and dried quickly.
I researched labs and found a lab that would turn my vision into a reality.
We began formulating and finally agreed on a formulation.
Then it had to pass FDA approval. It failed. My heart sank.
Back to the drawing board. We reformulated a few more times until it passed FDA approval.
During that time I kept feeling like the clown punching bag. You know the old school blow up that you would hit and it would pop back up. You can keep the punches coming but I’m going to pop back up and be stronger because of it.
Jamie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I know we are primarily focusing on Espieve the sunscreen business however it’s probably important to let the readers know that I am a highly sought after licensed esthetician, skin care specialist and spa owner, specializing in anti aging and hydrafacials. I feel having the skin care background and knowledge really helped in creating Espieve.
Dubbed the ‘Miracle Worker’, I’ve helped countless men and women achieve total skin transformation by pairing best-in-class products with highly customized facial treatments. Each facial therapy utilizes the latest in skin care technology to produce immediate, eminent results.
Best Facial winner 2017 and 2016 on the Orange County Hot List, Jamie is considered a go-to authority on esthetics in Southern California.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I am always asked how did you come up with the name, Espieve? It definitely wasn’t easy and was probably one of the most difficult yet simple things that needed to be done. Choosing a name has to be catchy, creative and fun. Every name I wanted to have was either taken (url) or wouldn’t trade mark for what ever reason. After pounding my head on the table time after time. I hired an agency to help with the naming process. Over 500 names were submitted. Nothing sounded right or it looked funny when reading it on paper. When I saw espieve I thought to myself now that looks cool. I’m not going to lie, I had to ask how it was pronounced. Just say S P F with a French accent, this Espieve. Once I said it , I knew it was the one! It was kismet and a good thing because it was able to trademark.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I am very blessed to have an amazing skin care business that has fully funded the sunscreen line. I try to make good business decisions by not purchasing unnecessary equipment and not to get distracted by “the bright shiny object syndrome”.
