Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hether and Haley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Hether and Haley, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Haley: There isn’t one episode more meaningful than another. When we are given the opportunity to sit down with a family member and listen as they talk about their loved one, each one of the episodes is meaningful to us.
Hether and Haley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Haley: People assume my sister and I started Who Dunnit Sisters because a loved one has gone missing or been a victim of a homicide.
Hether: But it was the lack of media exposure to many of Kansas City’s unsolved murders and missing persons cases that inspired us to want to bring more awareness to their stories. There are many cases out there where the only information given to the public is the date a missing person was last seen. Nothing else. Or only the location of where an unsolved murder occurred.
Haley: We try and contact family members of the victims before doing an episode. These victims had lives, people who loved them, jobs, kids. We listen to the family members and learn about the victims on a personal level and in turn give the family a platform to speak their minds.
The viewers who share our episodes help keep the names of these victims alive. We must keep talking about them; telling and retelling their stories, in the hope we reach the right individuals who’ll finally step up and give that bit of information that will solve these cases.
If we can flip the script of the negative aspects of “snitching” and turn it into “doing the right thing”, we can all solve some of these cases. We need to put fear into the people who are committing these crimes instead of the people who are witnessing them.
We don’t have sponsors and we don’t ask for donations. We do this because we see the hurt that families are going through. We listen to them and help give them the voice that they may feel they have lost along the way.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Hether: The Kansas City area currently has around 700 unsolved murders and over 300 missing persons cases. And many of the suspects are still free and walking the streets of our city. Our mission is to provide awareness of these cases.
Haley: These families share with us the worst days of their lives and trust us with their stories. After seeing what these families are going through, their pain makes us want to do more.
Hether: We know the suspects talk. And it’s to those people who have information we hope our episodes reach so they will contact Crime Stoppers or the detectives with information and tips. Family and loved ones are the strongest advocates of these unsolved homicide and missing person cases. The second is you, the viewer or listener. We rely on you to share our videos and podcasts, to bring awareness to the cases.
Haley: We’ve been doing our podcast for a year, and we plan to continue to be here for the families and hopefully see these cases to the end.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Hether: Meeting the family members and learning more about the victims. We never knew the victims we cover in our podcasts. But through their loved ones’ eyes, we get the chance to know who they were. We learn about their dreams, fears, hobbies. These victims are more than a statistic. Much more than “the 93rd homicide victim of 2019.” He has a name. It’s Zavien Hall. We’ve met the fiercest, strongest, most passionate people. These people are the victims’ biggest advocates for justice. And as long as they have breath in their lungs, they will fight for that justice.
Haley: These families feel broken, and some no longer trust people. The approval, trust, acceptance, and friendship we receive from these families after what they have been through is rewarding enough. And we’ll hold onto that forever.
