We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. José Valentino. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. José below.
Hi Dr. José, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an artist and business CEO, the most meaningful project I’ve worked on cannot be attributed to a specific album or project. Instead, it lies in the everyday pursuit of bettering myself as an individual, refining my craft, and positively impacting the lives of my clients and fans. It is this commitment to excellence that has earned me numerous prestigious accolades, including GRAMMY® Awards, EMMY® Awards, and recognition from esteemed institutions such as the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and Inc. Magazine.
However, the true essence of my meaningful work lies beyond the accumulation of awards and accomplishments. It stems from a deep-seated tenacity that fuels my drive to consistently deliver optimal services and products to my clients and fans. This unwavering determination enables me to overcome challenges, push the boundaries of creativity, and continuously evolve as an artist and entrepreneur.
In addition to tenacity, empathy plays a pivotal role in my approach to my work. Understanding the needs and desires of my audience allows me to create music and experiences that resonate on a profound level. By empathizing with their emotions, aspirations, and dreams, I am able to craft art that not only entertains but also touches their souls.
Moreover, my journey is guided by the principles of faith, hope, and love. These core values infuse my work with a sense of purpose and authenticity, connecting me to the hearts of my fans. By embracing others’ dreams as if they were my own, I foster a genuine connection that goes beyond the realm of business, building a community united by shared passions and aspirations.
Ultimately, my most meaningful project is a continuous endeavor, driven by the relentless pursuit of personal and artistic growth, the power of empathy, and a foundation built upon faith, hope, and love. Through my music, I aim to inspire, uplift, and create moments of transcendent beauty that leave a lasting impact on the lives of those who experience it.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view, society can take several crucial steps to best support artists, creatives, and foster a thriving creative ecosystem. These steps are informed by insights from interviews and articles such as the ones found on the University of Florida’s College of the Arts website and the All About Jazz platform.
First and foremost, it is essential to recognize the value and impact of the arts in society. Supporting artists and creatives starts with acknowledging their contributions to our cultural fabric and understanding the unique challenges they face. This recognition should extend beyond the entertainment value of their work and encompass the power of art to provoke thought, inspire change, and foster dialogue.
Secondly, providing access to comprehensive and inclusive arts education is vital. The University of Florida’s Music Business and Entrepreneurship program (for which I developed with my wonderful colleagues and Director Kevin Robert Orr and serve as the program’s curricular leader and developer) exemplifies a new model for music education that prepares students not only as talented performers but also as knowledgeable entrepreneurs and industry leaders. Such interdisciplinary programs equip artists with the skills to navigate the complexities of the modern creative landscape, fostering resilience and adaptability.
Furthermore, society can bolster support for artists by promoting equitable compensation and fair working conditions. This involves advocating for policies that protect intellectual property rights, ensuring fair payment for artistic contributions, and fostering a culture that values and rewards creativity. Collaboration between artists, institutions, and policymakers can help establish sustainable business models that enable artists to thrive financially while maintaining their artistic integrity.
Creating robust networks and platforms for artists to showcase their work and connect with audiences is another crucial aspect. Embracing digital technologies and online platforms can provide artists with wider reach and opportunities for exposure. Additionally, fostering local artistic communities, organizing events, and supporting live performances can invigorate the cultural scene and create spaces for artists to engage with diverse audiences.
Lastly, society can support artists by actively engaging with and consuming their work. This entails attending exhibitions, concerts, and performances, purchasing artwork, and streaming or purchasing music and creative content through legitimate channels. By actively participating in and valuing the arts, individuals can contribute to a sustainable creative ecosystem and enable artists to continue producing meaningful work.
In summary, society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by recognizing their value, providing comprehensive arts education, advocating for fair compensation and working conditions, fostering platforms for exposure, and actively engaging with their work. By implementing these strategies, we can cultivate an environment where artists can flourish and make lasting contributions to our cultural heritage.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous challenges that have tested my resilience. One story that stands out is when I faced a particularly difficult period in my career. During this time, I realized the importance of seeking out a great support system and surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who believed in my vision.
One of the lessons I learned was the significance of carefully selecting business partners and friends. I discovered that aligning myself with individuals who shared similar values, work ethic, and dedication was crucial for long-term success. By surrounding myself with a supportive network, I found the encouragement and motivation needed to overcome obstacles and stay resilient in the face of adversity.
Another important lesson I learned was to never settle and lower my value, whether it be in terms of compensation or standards of excellence. I realized that by maintaining a high level of professionalism and refusing to compromise my principles, I could attract opportunities and collaborations that aligned with my vision and values.
Treating others as if they were family members or dear loved ones became a guiding principle for me. I understood the importance of building genuine relationships, showing care and respect to everyone I worked with, and fostering an environment of trust and collaboration. This approach not only enhanced the quality of my interactions but also opened doors to new opportunities and partnerships.
When taking on a project, I embraced the mindset of treating it as if it were my own. I invested wholeheartedly, putting in the necessary effort and attention to detail to ensure its success. This mindset, coupled with humility, allowed me to approach every endeavor with a sense of ownership and commitment, driving me to deliver beyond expectations.
In pursuing my dreams, I aimed so big that even the people who supported me and believed in me would initially chuckle at my ideas. However, through persistence and unwavering determination, I proved that I was serious about my aspirations. This mindset reminded me of the words of notable entrepreneurs who have achieved great success: “Creativity is the key to success in the future, and primary education is where teachers can bring creativity in children at that level.” (Kobe Bryant) and “Never underestimate the power of ‘no.’ The word ‘no’ says you’re asking the wrong question or you’re talking to the wrong person.” (Kevin O’Leary).
I also draw inspiration from biblical figures and the teachings of Jesus. Their unwavering faith, resilience, and dedication remind me to persevere and trust in the journey. The words of Colossians 3:23 which says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Overall, my journey has taught me the importance of resilience and the power of surrounding myself with the right people. By seeking out a strong support system, selecting partners and friends carefully, maintaining high standards, treating others with care, investing wholeheartedly, remaining humble, aiming high, and exceeding expectations, I have been able to overcome challenges and achieve success in the ever-changing landscape of arts entrepreneurship.
