Alright, Chantal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind my mission to teach everyone about the claims handling process stems from my own personal experiences working as a claims adjuster and claims manager for over two decades. During that time, I witnessed firsthand the confusion and frustration that many insureds and claimants experienced when trying to navigate the complex and often opaque claims handling process. I saw how misunderstandings and miscommunications could lead to delays, denials, and even lawsuits.
As a result, I became passionate about demystifying the claims handling process and empowering insureds and claimants to understand their rights, responsibilities, and options when it came to filing and settling claims. I also wanted to help adjusters become better equipped to handle claims effectively, efficiently, and ethically.
For me, this mission is meaningful because it allows me to make a positive impact on people’s lives by helping them through what can be a very difficult and stressful time. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’m helping insureds and claimants achieve fair and prompt resolutions to their claims, while also helping adjusters improve their skills and knowledge. Ultimately, I believe that education is the key to making the claims handling process more transparent, fair, and just for everyone involved.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Thank you for the opportunity to share about myself and my work. My name is Chantal M. Roberts, and I am a claims handling expert witness with over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. My passion is educating others about the claims handling process, from the adjusters to the insureds and claimants.
I started in the industry as a multi-line claims adjuster. As I’ve gotten older I realized that there was a gap between new adjusters and those who had been in the industry for a while. I wanted to bridge that gap and help new adjusters learn from my experiences, so I wrote my first book, The Art of Adjusting: Writing Down the Unwritten Rules of Claims Handling.
Since then, I have expanded my mission to include educating insureds and claimants as well. I believe that through education, we can make the claims process go more smoothly and ultimately help people receive the compensation they are entitled to.
I provide services as a claims handling expert witness, and as a consultant to claims departments helping clients navigate the complexities of the claims process and providing guidance on best practices and procedures. I’m currently teaching the next generation of insurance professionals at the Borough of Manhattan, City University of New York about risk management and insurance procedures.
I just completed writing my next book to educate people about insurance concepts and claims handling processes through reimagined fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and fables. It will be released on May 11, 2024.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my commitment to education and my ability to simplify complex concepts so that anyone can understand them. I am most proud of the impact I have made in helping both adjusters and claimants navigate the claims process with confidence and understanding.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes, my side hustle did turn into my main/full-time business or career. Originally, I wrote trade articles as a way to demonstrate my knowledge for attorneys as an expert witness. However, when the pandemic hit, I shifted my focus to writing a book on insurance claims handling for mid-career claims adjusters. This allowed me to stay productive during a difficult time and compete with other experts who had written books.
Then, I was asked to teach at BMCC-CUNY and facilitate an insurance professional designation course for The Institutes on insurance law. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for teaching insurance and get a sense of fulfillment when my students understand the concepts. I translated that feeling into attempting to give that same knowledge of the claims handling process to lay people when they have sustained an accident and are going through the insurance process.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped build my reputation within my market is my honesty and directness. I’m not afraid to tell my clients or colleagues what I think, even if it’s not what they want to hear. I believe that my willingness to speak my mind and offer candid feedback has earned me the respect of those around me. Additionally, my extensive experience in the industry and my dedication to educating others about the claims handling process has also contributed to my reputation as a trusted expert in the field.
Another factor that has contributed to building my reputation in the industry is my unwavering commitment to integrity. I believe that my reputation as an expert witness and claims adjuster is only as good as my word and my actions. This means that I am not afraid to walk away from a project if I feel that I am not on the same page as my client or if I believe that something is not right. While it can be difficult to turn down work, I believe that maintaining my integrity is the most important aspect of my business and ultimately leads to the most successful outcomes for my clients. Overall, I believe that my honesty, expertise, and dedication to educating others have helped me build a strong reputation within my market.
