We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesse Neo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesse below.
Jesse, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Gemtracks aims to help artists around the world enter the music industry and be given equal chances of succeeding. Gemtracks is most known for its beat marketplace where every track is sold for $149 each. Most of the sellers are from developing countries in Africa and South America, while the buyers are from North America and Europe. This gives emerging music producers the chance to get their music be heard in bigger markets. We see this as a great use of technology as it enables producers from countries with little chances of getting their music into the first world a chance to build a name for themselves. It is a win-win for both sides.
For the artist side, Gemtracks offers affordable ways to help produce radio-quality music and then market those songs through playlist placements and other marketing services. They are so easy even someone in high school would be able to them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Gemtracks started as a personal store used to sell original backing tracks, hence the word ‘track’ in the website name. However, as lockdown took effect around the world in 2019, many musicians came to me with suggestions to turn Gemtracks into a global marketplace where anyone could sell their tracks and collaborate with other musicians regardless where they were located on the globe. The idea flourished, and eventually, there were demands to offer other services as well such as studio booking and playlist pitching.
As it was proven that technology could have so much of a positive effect on the world and how music is created, Gemtracks is now all about empowering artists and giving them access to top quality services to produce and market their music.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The fact many artists were getting professionally produced and access to top recording studios spoke for themselves. These artists would recommend Gemtracks to their friends and even fans – or perhaps inspire them to get into the music industry as well, and would get Gemtracks recommended to them.
On the other hand, many of our sellers find that once they have listed their beats onto Gemtracks, sales would start coming through without doing any additional promotion on their sides. This is because the algorithm does not favor anyone, and gives every seller equal exposure.
All in all, we take both buyers and sellers on our platform very seriously. It is because of this that they keep coming back because they can see that we care about them and actually want them to succeed.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
The whole Gemtracks platform was built in-house. We do not use any existing libraries or frameworks because we wanted to make sure our service offered and did things that are new and innovative. For example, once a seller lists a new beat, they are automatically watermarked, tagged and sorted into categories. As the procedure is so specific, there is no existing off-the-shelf product that could help us do this.
The pros of being in-house is that it gives us full control of the website and allows us to easily make tweaks when deemed necessary. For example, once we got feedback that the checkout process was too complicated. So we quickly made changes to it and founded a new payment provider that could offer one-click payment.
The cons is that if we do find issues in our website, we would need to depend on our staff to resolve it. Sometimes our team may not be up to date with current vulnerabilities, which can be an issue.
