We were lucky to catch up with Angel Hendrix recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Angel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
In 2021, I left my corporate role after fifteen years of service to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. I started NC Solution Group which is a notarial & field service agency. In the fall of 2022, I was looking for an office space for NC Solution Group. My local faith-based ministry had office space available. Once I took a tour of the space, I quickly realized that I didn’t need all that square feet and could share it with the community. This is when I knew I was on to something; and Office Batch was formed.
I was connected to a large community of new and seasoned small business owners who were in need of affordable office space, business resources, networking opportunities and more. I am a firm believer of being the change you wish to see. Not only would my options be affordable, but my community needed to see a space created by a person of color and in particular, a woman!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I spent over seventeen years in the insurance industry helping major corporations solve their most important benefit challenges. I am an Integrated Professional Studies graduate from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Founder of NC Solution Group, a leading notarial and field service agency and Office Batch; a growing coworking space for business professionals. My most important role is a mom to a brilliant teenager, self-coined notary coach, innovator, design thinker and more. When I’m not being an agile entrepreneur, I enjoy trying new cuisines, crafting, dancing to house music and serving at my local faith-based ministry.
As a black female-owned coworking space located in High Point, NC, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where entrepreneurs and business professionals can thrive. Our goal is to provide a space where you can work, collaborate, and grow in a supportive and rewarding community of innovators. We offer a range of flexible membership options, including business addresses, free & paid day passes for coworking, office space, as well as access to a large and mini-conference room for your meetings and events. In addition, we offer a variety of amenities that include a monthly newsletter, business/career resource classes, unlimited coffee, snacks, printing, notary services, and more.
What sets me apart from other spaces is that I too am a rising entrepreneur. Everything I create for this space is always with the mindset of what do my entrepreneurial stakeholders need. This is not just a business for-profit; this is for the people! We are a hub of resources and programming designed to help the community achieve their goals.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market was two things; relationship building and resourcefullness. When people say they don’t have support, I tell them support is created and not given. You have to build the support and team you need to be successful and that comes with trial and error. Meeting new people and making new acquaintances has come naturally for me. Finding people who are loyal, share the same values and willing to hold each other accountable without offense is the challenge. Once you find your people, you have to work on the relationships being mutually beneficial but not equal. Meaning we both support, were friendly, we sacrifice and we pour into each other. There are times the support make look different but thats what makes the relationships unique. You must continue showing up for the people who show up for you! With lot’s of trials & prayer, God has positioned me to be surrounded around people who love and support all my endeavors without wanting anything in return.
Being willing to share your resources with others is somewhat frowned upon in the black community because people are afraid that one may surpass them. A gatekeeper is someone who blocks and control access to information to intentionally limit others to not surpass them. I believe whats for me; is for me. So even if I give you my blueprint, you still won’t be able to execute the way God has blessed me to execute. So I share ALL of my resources. I AM NOT a gatekeeper. Sharing with a willing heart has built trust, credibility and an overwhelming amount of connections in my community.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The greatest lesson I had to unlearn was I didn’t have to follow the “traditional path” in order to be successful. You are taught to go to college & get a job. While continuing your education and making income is great, one can be successful without the two. Now while I do have a college degree, it took me seventeen years to complete it. I worked for top insurance firms for seventeen years making an amazing salary and couldn’t let get the desire to atleast try. No one in my family understood entrepreneurship over a corporate career. It wasn’t until I wanted to bet on myself and pursue entrepreneurship is when my perspective about life changed. I wanted the freedom, the flexibility and uncapped income potential that only working for yourself could bring. I had to unlearn the traditional path of doing things not for myself but for my child. I want her to continue her education but if for some reason she changes course to pursue entrepreneurship; my goal is to support her emotionally and financially. When I look back at my experiences, I’m so glad took I the risk.
