We recently connected with David Hinton and have shared our conversation below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest issue with profitability is visibility and access to working with magazines and well-paying brands. As a freelance wardrobe stylist having access to magazines and brands is tough. Avenues like Kavyar allow submissions to their magazine platform but do not pay the creators. Yet, the creator has to pay for the magazine. Being creative is tough in itself because you don’t want to replicate someone else’s work and also have to put out content that touches people.
David, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up, I was always fond of the editorials in magazines. The images gave me hope for a better life. Something outside of the environment I was currently living in. Yet, I never knew schooling or even a career path was available in editorial styling. So, truthfully it was always something I had burning inside to do, and I took the chance and went after it. I didn’t want to live the what-if life. I wanted to say I gave it a chance, and the outcome was worth the journey. That goes for anything in life you do because failure could be the set-up for your next successful venture.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Your team and their voices should be heard. Everyone is working towards a common goal. You hired the people on your team for a reason, and they should be effective, so utilize their expertise in the best way possible. Then the morale will fall into place.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience by providing my services at street meet-ups. I brought myself and my talent and offered advice and creative direction on shoots with photographers and models. That allowed me to obtain visibility and get followers that would be interested not only in my journey but the content I was putting out on my social.
