We recently connected with April Day and have shared our conversation below.
April, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Going back to school at 36 years old felt like one of the biggest risks I have taken thus far. After working in various jobs that felt unfulfilling, I decided it was time for a change. I saw a Naturopathic doctor to address my severe adult acne, chronic hives, and digestive issues after seeing several other practitioners who informed me there was nothing that could be done for my conditions. I tried all the available prescription medications which only helped temporarily. I never considered being a doctor but my experience with a Naturopathic doctor felt unlike any other interaction in a medical setting. She had compassion, she listened, and she took the time to investigate why I had these symptoms. Most importantly, she gave me hope that my body could heal. When I decided to go back to school, the thought of medical school felt daunting. School was not easy, but I continually reminded myself of the impact the Naturopathic doctor made on me. I wanted to give hope to others dealing with chronic skin conditions. Your skin is the first thing people notice. It affects confidence, which can negatively impact one’s ability to thrive in work, social situations, and relationships. My goal as a Naturopathic doctor is to help patients feel comfortable and confident in their skin so they can be the best version of themself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Naturopathic Doctor who completed my doctorate at Bastyr University, San Diego. My undergraduate degree was from Belmont University in Nashville, where I studied Psychology. I spent several years working in social services and the nonprofit sector. My journey into Naturopathic medicine began with my own struggles with digestive complaints while dealing with severe adult acne. After trying many mainstream treatments and prescriptions, I realized something was missing. I spent several months using naturopathic medicine to address my digestive issues, which also healed my acne. This experience inspired me to seek a new career helping others wanting to heal from the inside out.
I have advanced training in treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and am currently in the process of completing additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. I have completed training in functional lab analysis and assessing the thyroid and its function. I love to travel and have spent time in Germany to learn more about the benefits of hydrotherapy as a modality for healing the body.
It is my passion to help patients optimize health using individualized treatments to target underlying causes of imbalance. I have special interests in autoimmune conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as skin conditions, and healthy aging.
In my free time, I enjoy working out and spending time outdoors. I also love dogs and cannot stop myself from saying hello to everyone’s furry friends when passing them on walks or hikes.

Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
This past November 2021, I bought a practice in Encinitas, California called Skin & Natural Medicine. I worked with the previous owners for 3 years prior to buying the practice and absolutely love what I do. Helping others with chronic inflammatory skin conditions has always been my focus because I have had lifelong struggles with skin concerns myself. When the opportunity showed up to take ownership of the business, it was a no-brainer! As I take on this new role, I intend to continue the quality care Skin & Natural Medicine has given their patients since their start in 2016. As a Naturopathic Medical Doctor, I appreciate the collaboration and partnership built with my patients and continually dig deeper for answers so you can feel your best again.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes! 100%! I just wish I found this career earlier in my life!
