We were lucky to catch up with Crystal Romo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success can mean different things to different people, and there is no one-size-fits-all formula leading up to it. However, setting clear goals, building strong relationships and having personal resiliency are some of the skills that first come to mind. I consistently keep a journal and a yearly planner to annotate my lists of goals. My journal holds all the details of my dreams, goals & aspirations, while my planner holds onto the tasks leading up to those goals. I believe in the power of written word. It creates accountability, clarity and a visualization for success and manifestation.
I look back on old journals and small Hello Kitty notebooks I would keep and I remember old goals I actually accomplished and then I feel pride. I’ve constantly seen my life take on new avenues because I’ve always been hungry for new experiences and new places. One big life goal was to experience living in New York, so I made the move after lots of planning, and lived there for two years. I lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan, explored all the boroughs with friends (old & new), assisted a Teen Vogue cover shoot and enjoyed many sunset rooftop happy hours. I made the absolute most of those two years and look back on that time fondly. I couldn’t have done it without patience, planning and the strong network I maintained. Set goals, build a strong network, grow in small ways every day and make sure your dreams take shape beyond your sleep time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Crystal Romo and I own CrystalBlueSkies.com, where I share my best travel recommendations, travel photography and personal style. I have a background in makeup artistry, styling, and currently travel for a living as a flight attendant. When I’m not in office 37,000 feet high, I work as a freelance makeup artist who can also capture your headshot or lifestyle event. I have a passion for beauty and composition. I’ve been a makeup artist for over 15 years and worked weddings to fashion photoshoots. I love being on set and making people feel beautiful. I worked on my first cover shoot for Teen Vogue, assisting another lead artist. That was an exciting career milestone.
I’ve been a flight attendant for over four years and had a love for travel all my life. My mom was raised in Mexico City and she would take me there every summer from San Diego- where I grew up. From a young age I learned how big and vastly different home was from other places. I was privileged in my family travels and was able to explore from a young age. I’ve seen 29 countries and counting. I gain so much inspiration every time I go somewhere new. The best lessons are learned through travel and exploration.
My friends have always known me as a wanderlust and always asked me for recommendations. I would get asked so often that I finally decided to create a resource to share with everyone. This is how CrystalBlueSkies.com was born. So far I have eight detailed city guides, with more to come. Explore my site and instagram (@crystal.blueskies) for more travel inspiration. You can find my social media links, makeup portfolio, and branded daddy hats for sale. I love to collaborate and happy to connect with new faces!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist or creative means having the freedom to work on projects that are personally meaningful and fulfilling. The process of creating art is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, which allows me to learn more about myself and my abilities. I’m so grateful to have the gift of my senses to create, whether it be a beautiful photo or makeup on someone’s face. I’ve always been drawn to all forms of art since I can remember. I remember being asked in elementary school to help my classmates color their presentation boards. I think from those memories on I realized I had a lean towards color and craft.
Life is an art, down to the way to dress and live everyday. Creating is a form of alchemy and it’s something so special to me. I appreciate collaboration, the vision and the execution of art. I love being surrounded by art and artists. They just see the world in a very romantic way. We are storytellers creating pages in the colorful book of life.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think we can all admit COVID affected us all in different ways. 2020 took me away from a career I was so excited to explore and that was flight attending. I had one year under my belt as a flight attendant and was so excited to fully enjoy my newly earned travel benefits. Travel trends were at all time high and we all just got the rug pulled from right under us. I was furloughed from flying and had to stay grounded. This is when I had to figure out what to do in the meantime. I decided to turn to my makeup skills and fully go freelance. I launched my beauty instagram and connected with more artists and probably produced the most recent portfolio work in that time. I had to be resilient and resourceful. I think it’s important to learn various skills and have multiple streams of income because you’ll never know what could change. I’m so thankful I had other valuable skills to pivot towards. Now I love being able to do all of it.
