We recently connected with Angelica Montaño and have shared our conversation below.
Angelica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Like any artist will tell you, being a creative human being has many emotional roller coasters. When I first began my journey as a singer I had more downs than ups. I was in the process of developing, understanding and cultivating my own authentic and organic voice, Now where I am currently standing I am extremally happy with the artist I have evolved to be. Yes there are still days where my voice is not at its best and I have to work a bit harder than normal, or just life in general gets a bit difficult so that too causes a delay in my training and practice, but I have learned through out the years to take those days and use them as a learning situation to become a better singer. I am happy to say I can look back on all my years of voice training and see that my hard work and tears in the practice room have and will continue to pay off.
I use to wonder a lot about the choice I had made to dedicate my life to music and I wondered many times what my life would have been if I would have just stuck to the norm, but every time I tried to walk away from music somehow music would cross my path over and over again. I was honestly miserable without music, I was not my true self I felt sad, depressed and angry. Yes life would have been extremally easier if I would have taken on a regular life but life is not about that, it is about following your dreams and fighting against the odds to follow your passion. Luckily I have always had a strong support system that always encouraged me to follow my dreams and because of them I am able to do music full time. As an artist it is our duty to make a positive change in this world and encourage others that it is okay to follow your dreams and aspirations.

Angelica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Born and raised in California, Angelica Mexican roots run deep. Her parents are from Los Reyes Michoacán Mexico. “My best childhood memory is when my parents sold paletas at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena.” said Montaño. “It was a thrill to meet many Mexican singers backstage at the event.” You might say that was the beginning of her love affair with traditional Mexican music.
“Selena Quintanilla was my very first role model,” she said. “Selena inspired me at such a young age to sing and dance on stage. Because of her singing and performing has always come naturally to me.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist are a lot so I will share a few. First of all it is such an amazing feeling to be on stage and you get to bring joy and smiles on people you have never met before. You help them forget about whatever they are going through at least for an hour or two, you get to inspire them and let them know through music that they are not alone. The second one is being able to live your childhood dream. Ever since I can remember I had made up my mind at such a young age of what I was going to do with my life and that was to be a singer. The third reward is being an artist helps you, if you put in the proper work, evolve into a compassionate, loving, and understanding person along with the perfect balance of being strong, assertive and you learn to keep your head up high no matter what life throws at you.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It does not take much to support artists at all now a days with everything being on social media and music being digital all society has to do is simply click like, share and subscribe to the artist’s content or stream their music on any digital platform the user prefers. Another way of supporting the artists is by attending to their shows especially if the artist took the time out of their hectic schedule (because every artist wears all the hats. From being their own make up artist, stylist, hair, marketing, coach etc.) to personally invite someone then those guests would support the artist so much just by simply showing up to the performance.
