We recently connected with Shudi Nelson and have shared our conversation below.
Shudi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve created a handful of albums in the form of beats & utilize the essence of “delivering messages” into the tapes. I wanted to be able to tell a story or give meaningful insight by using my beats like how artists use their lyrics to portray a story or message. One of my main projects that are out now that deserves that type of recognition is my album “Gratitude” which is up under the moniker “Lil’ Nate NB”.
Shudi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello. My name is Shudi Nelson, stage name is ‘El Shudi. Based in Macon, GA, I started making music at the age of 14. I had an issued netbook that the school gave, began downloading mixtapes, listening to the songs & wondering how the production behind the music was made. I stumbled across a digital audio program called “FL Studio” & have been looking at YouTube videos to learn the science behind the program so I can get started to making beats. It wasn’t until 2011 when I released my first beat to the public & was blown away by my close friends & family. They encouraged me to make this into a career. I took time to perfect my craft & develop my sound by listening to old school music along with new school. In 2016, I started getting familiar with another digital audio program called “Pro Tools” & started doing some audio engineering.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’m able to utilize my God-giving gifts to inspire others to use theirs with the mindset of being of service towards others. My brand is to remind people to tap into their inner Godliness (inner self) & using their creative skills to help get there along with others in an act of servitude.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that I play a role, whether it’s minor or major, in a bigger picture that goes beyond my own desires & goals .I had to unlearn that money, fame, titles, & images are NOT keys to happiness but tapping into your inner self IS.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The foundation of your life is God. He’s a creator & we’re made in the image of Him so what does that make me & you? CREATORS. So I don’t let the judgement of others get in the way of my creativity nor my well-being.
