We recently connected with Jewell Swetman and have shared our conversation below.
Jewell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am a fitness trainer and nutrition coach with a BIG Sweet tooth! I also have lost over 100lbs naturally. I love food, but I really love healthy food that tastes really good. As I found myself accumulating a busier and busier life, I found myself reaching for convenient foods that could satisfy my sweet tooth while respecting my goals and my health.
I found that there really aren’t a lot of great options out there except for highly processed, sugar and fat packed, and frankly poor tasting decisions out there with a laundry list of ingredients.
I knew I could do better, my mission is to create convenient foods without sacrificing taste, time and health.
When I create a new product, I always create them with my customers tastebuds and their health in mind.
All of my products contain high quality ingredients and will blow your mind and your tastebuds!
Jewell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into my business because after I took an interest in my own health and wellness, I harnessed that love and found how fulfilling it was for me to share it with others. As an overweight child that carried my weight into early adulthood, I felt like a brand new person when I lost my weight and found fitness.
At first I was highly ashamed of my former self, and often didn’t talk about my past. When I realized sharing my story made me more relatable and that I actually created motivation for my clients and friends, I found that sharing my story actually made a difference.
I have always loved to cook, but taking an interest in my health, broadening my pallet and learning more about nutrition has been so fun and rewarding in many ways.
Now I am so proud to share that I get to create new food products that I can share with my customers and I even play a big role in a meal prep company to bring fresh healthy food to my community every day.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I feel very blessed to have the business partner that I have. He manages more of a behind the scenes role while I get to interact more with customers and the products. Without his support and experience Sweet Fuel would not be where we are right now.
We met at my first gym and bonded over giving out best efforts in our workouts. He always laughs about how someone so little (I am 4’10) could always outrun him in the workouts and could hear the pitter patter of my feet when I was closing in. When we both found out we had lost basically a whole person combined in excess weight, we were in the middle of having breakfast and just looked at each other like we just bonded for life!
Any advice for managing a team?
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever gotten, spoke about how your team is the life of your business. Your teams morale is what keeps your business going, if you don’t invest in your team and their happiness how can you expect them to work on your business and help it acrue dollars when you are not around? Don’t micromange, trust. If you have hired the right people, your trust will go a long way. If you hired the wrong people, you will know very quickly. You don’t want employees, you want team members.
Part of how we keep that culture is getting to know each other personally, sharing coffee, having lunch/dinner and talking about their roles and opportunities in the company. When we grow, everyone grows.
