We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessie Colom a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jessie Colom, Professional Makeup Artist and proud creator of Mili Rain Makeup Cosmetics. Born & raised in South Florida, my love for makeup began when I was 15 years old, experimenting with colors and shapes. In December of 2019, I graduated Academy of Glam from their 120 Hour Power Professional Makeup Artistry course. This program allowed me to refine my skills as an artist and open me up to different styles I grew fond of over time. During the pandemic of 2020, I researched other ways to continue my involvement in the beauty community and landed on lipglosses. With the help of my friends, I strongly believe that I have created a formula that’s not only good but good for you.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Like I mentioned earlier, I officially started my business Instagram in December of 2019. Its actually the product of the pandemic of 2020 and having way to much time on my hands. In all honesty, social media can be very overwhelming and you can very easily get sucked in to wanting the perfect set up but, as corny as it may sound, I wholeheartedly believe that if you stay true to yourself and the talent you are showcasing to the world, you’ll find your tribe. You have to start somewhere and it’s a great feeling to look back and old posts over the years and see your growth.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My story begins with a beautiful, supportive elderly lady that I had the pleasure of calling my grandmother. After my grandfather passed away, my grandmother began to decline and we had to hire help. At one point, my grandmother had rejected almost everyone we had hired so naturally, I decided to step in as her caregiver. It wasn’t an easy job to take on both physically and mentally but it was rewarding to be able to tend to her until it was her time. I eventually had enough capital to test run my products and was able to share that milestone with her. She was so proud of me and actually gave me the big grandma seal of approval to one of her favorite lipgloss out of my collection. Whenever I feel like it’s impossible to keep going, I turn to the video of her holding my products and it gives me hope that I can and will continue my business.
