We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caleb D. Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Caleb D., thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
One thing about doing stand up comedy is the craft. In my opinion I don’t think stand up is something you can consider a hobby or take for granted. It’s something that you most definitely have to practice, study, and learn the craft. You have to be really mentally prepared and motivated once you get into this business. It can definitely discourage you at some points, but you have to just keep pushing through.

Caleb D., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Caleb D. Gordon and I’m a stand up comedian based out of the south side of Houston, Texas. AFTER GRADUATING FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI, I DECIDED TO PURSUE MY CALLING AS A STAND-UP COMIC. I’ve been doing comedy for about 5yrs now and I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m never afraid to put myself out there. Networking is something you’re going to have to do especially if you want to go far in this industry. It’s never about what you know, but who you know. What I’m most proud of about this journey is the time and sacrifices I’ve put in to surround myself around great people and to get to where I’m trying to go. I’m never afraid to be a student of the craft first.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Sometimes you have to take a step back and regather yourself before you decide to continue forward. I think sometimes as humans we want things to happen on our time when in fact it is not our time. I had to learn patience and to be grateful where I’m at now and not where I used to be. The backstory on this I’ve been really putting in some work and I feel as though I should in better position than what I’m in now, but like stated everything doesn’t happen when we want it to happen, it’ll happen when it’s supposed to. So for the meantime I’m just preparing for my moment.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Only thing I can say is God is the one that is steering me along this journey.
