We caught up with the brilliant and insightful This is a Moment Podcast a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
This is a Moment, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Choosing to launch our podcast, This is a Moment, was a risk in itself. It can be difficult to stand out in the podcast space when you don’t already have a large following, but we were passionate about creating something we felt was missing. There is a vulnerability in putting your work out for everyone to see when you’re unsure if anyone will connect with it, let alone listen to it, and you’re opening yourself to critique. This is a passion project for us, and it can be risky and full of hard work, but it is worth it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
This is a Moment Podcast was created to give fresh takes on pop culture moments, create a fun space for Black women, and share love and fandom with a larger community. As two Black women who operate in mostly white spaces, we’ve often felt unseen when it comes to our range of interests. We appreciate “mainstream” culture, but don’t feel that same love when it comes to underrepresented topics that equally affect pop culture.
In this podcast, we discuss our favorite moments in Pop Culture. If you love TV, Movies, Music, and geeking out over your favorite Celebrities, then come join our party! Rather than criticize or tear down art, we like to give people their flowers as we discuss prominent moments that affected us and deserve more recognition.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We love hearing stories from our listeners about what they related to or a memory they have associated with our topics. We get personal with our audience and we love when they get personal with us as well. One of our favorite things is when a listener lets us know we’ve introduced a new facet of a pop culture moment to them. We research our topics and it is extremely rewarding when we can bring some new insight to underrated moments. The audience engagement makes it all worth it!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In our opinion, if an artist resonates with you, you should spread the word! Sharing their work expands the community and allows the artist to grow. Word of mouth is the catalyst for many careers, especially for independent artists. With this in mind, we also interview artists monthly on our YouTube series: An Underrated Moment. Not only is it fun to hear their underrated pop culture moments, but it is also giving them another avenue to expand their audience.
