We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sydney Shearer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sydney, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
My first client was a friend of mine I had in high school and it was for homecoming dance. I had just started getting into makeup and I charged her $25. Looking back it was pretty bad, but it lit a spark in me and from them I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi! My Name is Sydney, also known as Snoww. I’m a professional Makeup Artist with 7 years in the industry. I graduated from John Jay Beauty College in 2018 and I specialize in glamour, bridal & print work. I also teach classes providing all my skills and techniques to aspiring MUA’s, MUA’s who want to learn a different technique and people who just want to learn how to do their own makeup. I give people with a safe space to become their most glamorous selves. I think the what sets me apart from other artists is I can create and complete a seamless look on every skin tone and I have the ability to create creative makeup looks. I’m really proud that so many people put their trust in me to help them feel beautiful.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation is diversity& passion. I have a diverse clientele because I put a lot of work and study on skin. The types, tones & undertones to be able to achieve a flawless look on whoever books with me. Plus, I love playing with color and I never create the same look twice. Everyone’s makeup is created just for them.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I wanted to be a makeup artist from the beginning but to build a business you have to have money and being a makeup artist, to make money you have to have a clientele and a steady one. In the beginning you don’t have that, so I worked 3 jobs outside of doing makeup to get the money I needed for my setup, products and everything else I needed to get running and also be able to live and pay my bills while chasing my dream. When Covid hit I lost my job and started taking my makeup career more serious than ever and for 3 years now I have solely been a makeup artist and it feels great !
