Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chance Chenoweth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chance, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’m a brainstorming type of person. I often will sit and think about what ideas and different routes one can take to take that next step on the road of life. I’ve always loved cars, been around them my whole life and grew up around them. I moved to Denver in 2003 to go to automotive school and got my first “real” job working at the Porsche/Jaguar dealership in Littleton, CO. I worked there for nearly 17 years, achieving gold level as a Certified Porsche Technician. I am still working on Porsches, and enjoy it quite a lot, but I also enjoy a nice cup of coffee, and wondered if there would be some way of blending my love for cars and coffee. After some research, I discovered a way to do just that, and began hunting around for catchy names that would embody my love of the 2 things, and, after doing some web searching, found the name/domain for 100 Octane Coffee was available. I immediately jumped on the idea and registered the domains and email addresses associated with it and then began the task of trying to build a web store around the name. After several revisions and adjustments, the 100 Octane Coffee brand and website as we know it was born, and continues to improve as needed. I didn’t want to just sell coffee however. I wanted it to be something that people can show their support by using items, such as coffee mugs ,or wearing merchandise at car shows, or anywhere. As such, my next step after getting the coffee live was to build the merchandise side of things, which has been really cool to see the support for. I feel like it has been very well received thus far, and this is only the beginning!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
First off, my name is Chance Chenoweth. I grew up in rural Colorado in my family’s construction business, and learned early on I enjoyed working with mechanical things. I moved to Highlands Ranch in 2003 to begin my next journey, which was car wash/detail at Stevinson Imports. I worked my way up to Porsche technician, which I did at that location for the next nearly 17 years. I am still doing that to this day, at SimplyEuro, a European repair shop in Castle Pines, CO. However….I knew there was something more to this whole thing, something to be able to build on, and to develop more of a business following, as well as to be able to better provide for those around me, to build a business I can pass on, and to develop more of a passive income for my family and life in general. One thing I’ve always enjoyed at home or on the go, is a good cup of coffee. How can I blend these together? Many an hour has passed thinking about how to make this a business venture, while still being able to keep doing my thing during business hours, but to be able to build something else in my spare time. It finally came to me, to be able to become a coffee distributor somehow. After much time spent online, checking this and researching that, and trying on different names and websites, it finally came to me….100 Octane Coffee. It symbolizes high performance. Anytime a high performance car needs a higher performing fuel, you must increase the octane rating, and often times 100 Octane is the go-to. It just seemed to fit and make sense that this name would also symbolize race fuel for the human body! It was the perfect fit, and proceeded to register the domain names, websites, email addresses, and everything I could associated with the name. I’ve spent several months building and developing the name and idea, as well as the logo, color scheme, website design, coffee selection, and finally, merchandise. I want to build more than just a website that sells coffee. I want to build a recognizable brand that fellow car/automotive enthusiasts, and adrenaline junkies alike can be proud to support and show off!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think one of the main things that has been hugely beneficial in growing my reputation was the following with clients I built while at the dealer for so long. I always loved interacting with clients and building those relationships. I was able to relate on so many levels with my clients over the year that my reputation soon grew to become one of the best Porsche techs in town or in state. On weekends, I would be at Porsche events anywhere I could find them, socializing and networking with current and potential clients. Many of these people have become good friends over the years, and are incredibly supportive in this new business venture.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think my most effective strategy this far has been sponsoring local car events and attending local car events. People love a good cup of coffee, and they seem to relate on an entirely different level when they are able to purchase it at an event they’re attending and/or being sold to them by someone they know or also can relate to. People seem to really enjoy “talking shop” with the person selling them the coffee, and it is incredibly rewarding to be able to help make that connection locally, and know that they’re getting a quality product and knowing I can stand behind it, as I personally drink it myself daily. Coffee is an incredibly strong networking “tool”, it brings people together and gets conversations going, and allows networks and social circles to continue to grow and blossom.
