Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Marcia Smith LPC, NCC. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Marcia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
As a natural rebel, I realized that my work in schools, community agencies, and hospitals wasn’t allowing me to truly make a difference in my clients’ lives. I was burnt out from doing administrative work instead of actual therapy. But I knew that my clients deserved genuine care that went beyond theory. So, I founded The Release Center, PLLC, a safe haven where clients can Release, Relate, and Renew with personalized care tailored specifically to their individual needs.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dr. Marcia D. Smith, and I am a licensed professional counselor with a national certification. My expertise lies in helping individuals heal their emotional brain and heart through the use of EMDR, CBT, and insightful conversation. When you work with me, you can rest assured that you will be in a safe and comfortable environment where you can be your authentic self without any fear of judgment. Over the years, I have helped many individuals manage a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, life changes, and wellness planning.
I am particularly proud of the support group I have created for high-achieving mothers who are trying to balance it all. Our group, Ebony Millennial Mom, focuses on teaching self-care strategies, building a community of like-minded moms, and exploring different parenting approaches. In addition to my counseling practice, I have also authored three books, including two children’s books and a journal for moms. As someone who is deeply committed to helping others, I believe that my books and support group can help individuals develop the tools they need to thrive in their personal and professional lives.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
At a certain point in my life, I realized that I didn’t have to compromise who I was in “professional” situations. I grew up believing that I had to conform to particular standards in regard to my behavior, appearance, and speech. However, as I became more comfortable in my own skin, I made the decision to stay true to myself and not change just to fit the mold of professionalism. This led me to discover that being authentic brought out the best in me.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my senior year of college, I received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Throughout my second semester, I found myself in and out of the hospital, struggling to maintain my clarity of mind. I recall a particularly alarming incident when one of my professors mistook my symptoms for drunkenness as I stumbled into class to take my final exam. Despite experiencing a decline in my health for three months without any definitive answers, I persevered and ultimately graduated from college. Since then, I have worked tirelessly to maintain my well-being and overcome the constant fear that my life would be cut short due to MS. Today, 15 years later, my MS is under control, and I continue to thrive.
