We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alyssa Farmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Life! It’s the BIGGEST risk to take; learn yourself, learn what you like, learn what you will accept and won’t accept. It’s all about the lessons and how you react to them is the chance you take. Every day is a new opportunity to go after what you want! So I wake up everyday and take the risk with promoting myself, elevating and going after the life I want! The life I chose is creating each day, and pushing out all these visions I have in my head onto the canvas. I believe the toughest thing for people to do these days is truly be themselves, so I wake up each day taking the risk of choosing me and what makes me truly happy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Alyssa Farmer, I am a Artist/Creative. I have been on my art journey since I can remember. Art has always been my outlet in life to express myself and my view point on life. During my school years I always joined art clubs, t-shirt contests, and anything artsy I could get into. It wasn’t until end of high school that I learned that I could make art a career path, I graduated from Millikin University in 2019 with a bachelors degree in Studio Arts; concertation in painting and printmaking. It was my sophomore year of college were I took the risk of actually sharing my art to the public and promoting myself. I thank God everyday that I took that chance with myself because, I’ve been elevating ever since then.
I create my own paintings that deal with; Self-Awareness, Self-Love, Mental Health, Enlighten and projecting positive imagery of Black Women and the Black Community. What sets me apart is that I am very unique with how I paint my images and all painting are very original.
The services I offer are; Host for Paint n Sips, Murals , Art Vendor and Painter. I am open to whatever creative opportunities that potential clients would look for!
I open myself up for any possible creative opportunities that I can have, I currently been open for collaborations with other creatives! I love to bring likeminded people together and come up with new ideas! Collaborating with others is apart of my brand, which is “#Supportyourlocalartist.” Support Your Local Artist is about bringing unity with other creatives and remembering to reach out to those in the community and bringing one another up. I want to be able to help others and uplift each other in our journey.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best thing society can do is let us creatives be ourselves! Let’s us have our freedom of expression without questioning it, without putting us in a box and labeling us. No matter what the artist creates, be open to the message, emotion or imagery they are putting out. Don’t judge because it’s different! Just appreciate the vision the artist has to give to the world.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist/creative is getting peoples reactions and view points on my artwork. How the love my color values, brush work and their interpretation on the pieces I present. Sometimes their perspectives are the same as mine and others give me a viewpoint I may have not even thought of. Just extremely cool to have people interested in my art and wanting to support me and my dream.
