We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olivya Soth & Christine Ly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olivya & Christine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
We’re grateful and proud to be earning a full-time living from our creative work as slime business owners. We never imagined or planned on earning a full-time living from slime, but our dedication and hard work have made it possible.
The OG Slimes story began in 2016 when Christine stumbled upon a video of slime on Instagram. Intrigued by the concept, she dove deep into the world of slime, determined to learn everything there was to know about it. However, at the time, the industry was niche, and there was a lack of information available online. Christine sourced her own ingredients and began experimenting with different textures. Within a year, Christine’s slimes blew up on Instagram. One slime in particular, Butter OG, stood out as it was the first-ever butter slime texture. As the demand for Christine’s slimes grew, she expanded the business. Soon after, Christine and I met in Japan, and we became best friends. With a background in Business and Visual Communications, I became a co-owner of OG Slimes, and we continued to share our creativity through slime and grow the business further year after year.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We create and sell slime! Slime has become popular in the past few years as a toy, stress-reliever and unique gift. It is a multi-sensory experience with a wide range of uses that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Interestingly enough, a majority of our customers are adults. Many people find playing with slime to be a calming and soothing experience, which can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
As slime creators, we are proud of the unique slimes we have brought to life and the joy they have brought to our customers. Our passion has allowed us to incorporate parts of ourselves into our work, resulting in unique slimes that reflect our interests and personalities. But beyond the aesthetics, what we value most is the ability to connect with others and bring out their inner child through our creations. It makes us happy to see people of all ages excited and curious as they explore the different textures, colors, themes and scents of our slimes. We are grateful that we can create a space of joy and relaxation where they can let go of their worries and simply enjoy the moment.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
We often get comments from those who don’t understand slime and view it as something useless. For us, slime is so much more than just a toy or pile of goo. It is a form of art that allows us to express our creativity in an unconventional and meaningful way. They may not understand it, and that’s okay. Art is subjective, and it doesn’t need to make sense to everyone. What’s important is that we follow our passions and continue to create from a place of authenticity.
For those who do connect with our creativity, it can be a source of joy, inspiration, and sometimes even healing. Slime has a way of bringing out the inner child in all of us and allows us to experience some joy in the moment. It can also be a tool for sensory stimulation and relaxation, making it a valuable resource for those with anxiety or sensory processing disorders.
So while some may not “get” our passion for slime, that doesn’t diminish its value as a form of art. We know that those who can relate to and connect with our work will appreciate it for the unique and meaningful experience that it is.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We built our audience on social media through a combination of factors, including authenticity, persistence, and being in the right place at the right time. We are grateful for the support of our followers through the years.
One of the key factors in our success has been our authenticity. We’ve always been honest and transparent with our audience, sharing our successes and struggles along the way. Another key factor is persistence. We’ve worked hard to consistently create high-quality content and engage with our audience on a regular basis. This has helped us keep our followers engaged and interested in our work, even as the slime industry has become more saturated over time. Lastly, being in the right place at the right time has also played a role in building our audience. The popularity of slime has grown so much in the past few years, and we were fortunate enough to be able to ride that wave and establish ourselves early on in the slime world.
