We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Murray. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I’ve honestly always wanted my own business so I’ve had many ideas and was always looking up ideas that I thought I could do. I came across this one day and started googling and watching YouTube videos. I remember texting my cousin, my sister and brother that night telling them I decided to start a candle business. My honest thought process behind it was like “oh this will be so easy” which I later found out was NOT the case at all. But it’s also a product I love and can now make for myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into my craft by me having always wanting to have a business or something that I can say is mine and that I’d feel proud about. Since launching I’ve had the pleasure of making personalized candles for birthday party favors, a bridal party, a baby shower, Mother’s Day, Father’s and a graduation celebration. I would say I help people have their homes smell good haha, or be able to give a sentimental gift to the candle lovers in their lives. I’m post proud of finally having an idea that I’m passionate about and that I didn’t just let stay an idea as I have done before, it has become hobby for me and allows me to be creative and try different ideas.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Really just word of mouth, also I have a magnetic flyer on my car that makes people interested. I attend pop up shops/markets here and there. Also this app called Mirrya – a site I use to sell my products people find me through there, which is how I have been able to have some out of state orders.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Yes I make my own products, I’m currently working on making my own jars. I did not know how to make candles yet. I did have to find a vendor for all the materials I use, at first I was ordering everything from Amazon which was not cost efficient. I joined other candle groups and learned of actual candle supply websites. I learned that there is actually a lot of many factors in making a candle having the right amount of fragrance to wax ratio, having the right size wick for your containers, also finding the containers you want to work with (which I’m still deciding on if I want to continue to sell different sizes or sell one size and give out samples or do both). Also with candle making you want to have back up wax, wicks, and containers and wholesaler incase there’s ever a time the one you use goes out of business, or stops being manufactured. The biggest lesson I have learned with candle making is testing is so important.
