We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful LJR . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with LJR below.
LJR, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes I wish I had started learning the music industry earlier, because I imagine how much farther along I would be with my vocal training and fanbase, and how some relationships I had then might be in better shape now. But the truth is that if I had, I might not have learned what I did in the other areas of music business, videography, and marketing that I did from the path I took. It’s easy to wonder “what if” and to live with regret about these things, and sometimes I feel that deeply when I’m struggling with an aspect of my voice as a singer, but when I take the time to think about it holistically, I’m grateful things have turned out how they did.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m LJR, an indie pop and alternative singer and filmmaker. I write music about my experience growing up and processing through emotional neglect, leaving church and god, difficulty in romantic relationships, and ultimately starting to find healing.
I help artists get affordable video content to grow their fanbases by making live concert and performance videos by hosting content creation events for artists making high quality one take videos and photos at incredibly affordable rates through my company LJR Creative. I also run Music Video Accelerator, an online course and 1 on 1 coaching program educating artists on how to make their own high quality music videos. I also write my own music and direct my own music videos. Being a musician myself, I know the journey and struggle artists face deeply, so I am able to give artists more of a holistic coaching experience and offer better products suited to the actual needs of artists than other videographers who don’t have this background.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Normalize the idea of donating 1-10% of one’s income to artists through buying subscriptions to artist’s brands to access BTS content and get early access to their main content.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The moments when I am pushing myself to the limit creatively, engaging all of my creative energy, and end up making something beyond anything I’ve created before.
