We recently connected with Crystal Mejia and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal, appreciate you joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
I believe most people in my industry believe in earning as many bookings as possible, instead of working with a few and providing a higher quality experience to each client that work well with you. Within our line of work, it can be very easy to say yes to working with every client that comes your way, especially when you are a new business owner trying to make a living off of what you do. Our industry can be considered niche, but I believe quality is everything when it comes to working with those who want to make their day special and perfect. The amount of time, research, planning and communication I put into my clients is curated with intention and thoughtfulness. My clients can trust that they will receive quality work through my services, and I will be able to cultivate their vision for their once in a lifetime event. This is why I work with selective clients, to ensure we are the right fit each other, rather than booking potentially hundreds of clients for the year.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi there,
My name is Crystal Mejia and I am the owner and founder of CM & Co Weddings and Events. My business began with aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur and curating something of my own that I have a passion for. I always loved helping others, wether it was through commmunity events, planning conferences, events, or styled shoots. The idea of planning weddings for couples by helping them bring a vision to life, as well as staying organized and assisting with research, has made me love what I do even more. My brand particularly has shifted from wedding planning, to destination weddings and elopements. I work with couples who want to plan their dream day in an initmate way, whether it’s an elopement with their closest family and friends, or a big wedding in the mountains or by the beach.
I help my clients create a timeline and floor plan to help eliminate all the stressors, from how tables and chairs need to be set up for their guest count, to coordinating with vendors on their wedding day. My favorite part about my job is getting to assist couples with their vision when it comes to design and decor. I start by developing a mood board based on color palettes, texture, decor, shapes, in order for them to truly see how their event day comes to life. There are so many details into putting an event together, as it takes time to plan and source the materials & vendors you may need to make this a reality. This is why I believe quality service matters the most, and making sure that my client and I are the best fit for each other by making their investment as intentional and thoughtful as possible.
When my clients book with me, they receive a welcome packet that goes through the whole planning process and outlines what we will provide at CM &Co. This helps give my clients a sense of peace knowing they are in good hands and can have a better idea what goes into planning their wedding day.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Vendor connection and relations has played a major role when it comes to growing my clientele. When it comes to working in the wedding industry, networking and building connections with other vendors is so vital because we work as a team on the event day and want to ensure the best possible service for our clients. By working side by side and understanding each others roles, it is more likely that vendor will refer you and to another client. We can’t make any event day happen without each others services, so it is important to act like a team and play like a team.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It has been my third year in the industry and I can say I have seen, learned and experienced so many things over the years. My business turned one this year, and I could not have done it with out the support of my clients and fellow vendors. There were times where I wanted to give up as self doubt would sometimes creep in, asking myself is this what I really want to pursue? Do I amount to the expectation of this role? It is so easy to feel defeated when things may have shifted to what you were not expecting. Or an event you have worked so hard to plan and you were not treated in a professional manner. I have learned over the years it’s so easy to quit and give up on something you have invested in so much time and resource to put a company together. However, the resilience has really shifted my perspective from questioning myself to giving my 100 percent no matter what, and that’s how what pushed me to be where I am today.
