We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taimarys Elias a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taimarys, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that in order to achieve success, you must have discipline, be resilient, and be persistent. Success is not just handed to anyone, and you have to work hard for it and stay committed to your goals. There will be times when things don’t go as planned, or you may feel like giving up, but you have to keep going. If you want to be successful, you need to have the ability to bounce back from setbacks and put in the necessary work to reach the level of success you desire.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always LOVED anything beauty related when I was younger. I remember saying I wanted to be in the beauty industry since I was a kid. At first, I would say I wanted to do nails, then facials, and after that I said I wanted to do hair and makeup. When I was 19, I went to sign up for beauty school with the idea of doing skincare, but to qualify for financial aid, I needed a program that had a certain amount of hours. I decided to go with nails and skin care and remember thinking, “I’ll just do both because you never know where you are going to end up.” During beauty school, I quickly realized skin care was not for me, but I was TERRIBLE at doing nails. I graduated from beauty school feeling like I made a huge mistake by dropping out of college and trying to pursue a career in beauty. When COVID hit a couple of months later, I had everything I needed to do nails and plenty of time to work on it. I started practicing and bettering my craft, and the rest is history. Now I offer various services, such as gel manicures, structure gel, gel x, pedicures, and nail art. I do not use any products that can cause nail damage, and I specialize in restoring new clients’ nail health and maintaining my regular client’s nail health. I believe that is what sets me apart from the other nail techs. Unfortunately, after being in this industry for three years, I’ve noticed that a lot of nail tech care more about getting paid for their service and forget about keeping the nails healthy or even learning what products they are using on their clients.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele was referrals. In the beauty industry, the best way to grow your business is through word of mouth. When you are good at what you do and treat your clients right, they will sell your service for you to their friends and family.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I managed to grow my social media audience by keeping up with the latest trends when it came to creating content for social media and consistently posting content that resonated well with my followers. I made sure to figure out what type of content performed the best and focused on sharing more of that. Running ads on social media and advertising my business in Facebook groups were also great ways to increase my following.
