Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to MarQuis Spivey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, MarQuis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Going from idea to execution was the hardest for me because that’s where my anxiety was at its peak. But at the same time you have to understand anxiety will always come and go and it’s all about sticking to your game plan and your business model. You do that with intense preparation. Once I knew I wanted to get into online arbitrage and wholesale with Amazon FBA I knew I had to dive into the industry to research and know it like the back of my hand. I spent one month researching it looking for ways most fail, then spent another month researching why others succeed. This research for me was at least 4 hours a day. Learning from those before me and practicing the things they did got me ready to execute. Understanding the business itself before going into it helped me find on what focus on and what to avoid fast so I could scale
MarQuis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know me, my name is MarQuis but I go by Nuru/Nuruspive! Born and raised in Battle Creek Michigan and currently live in Houston Texas. I got into Eccomerce because just like everyone else in the world I was looking for extra money so I could support myself and family. Amazon FBA was a low start up cost for me so I jumped in by selling groceries and other household kitchen items to customers. The business model is straight forward but the process of finding consistent profitable products are far from easy. That’s where the discipline comes in. Being willing to look at hundreds of products every day, calling distributors everyday, trying to overcome obstacles can be tiring fast but in this business rewards those who are in it for the long haul and who take extra steps to find these deals. What I do that sets me apart from most is actively looking for coupon deals I can take advantage of, also while taking advantage of Cashback opportunities to lower spending cost. Now that I’ve gotten more into wholesale I try to lower cost by buying more volume also, giving me cheaper prices will always keep me at the competitive advantage.
What I’m most proud of is how I was able to start with only $700 while managing to keep my average ROI above 45% and profit margins above 20%. Not “regular” by any means! I do take joy in helping customers find convenience in ordering online bundles/ specific items you can’t find in store. As the business grows I want more partnerships. Whether it’s more distributors, more brands or even more fellow amazon sellers who I can meet and bounce ideas off of. With that and the support of my closest ones back home and in Houston, Those natural relationships will bring clientele in left and right!
Any advice for managing a team?
Be genuine and honest! You’re not going to go far by pretending to be someone you’re not. I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I’m at now if it wasn’t for my team! The old adage is “Real recognizes real” and that’s been proven for me in every direction I go. My team respects me because I respect them and I made it clear what my goals for us all were and that I want to make sure everyone eats. It’s no secret we’re about to take over and since we all have that same vision we keep each other going and motivated!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The year 2018 was the worst for me and also the most necessary. It was a moment in Time where I only had $17 to my name and had no one really to reach out to for help. I had moved out of home and was at that moment living with other family in Ohio. It was at that moment that I realized this is what rock bottom felt like. I also realized no one was coming to save me. In that situation you can only do one of two things.
1.) Stay down and throw yourself pity parties
2.) Find some type of motivation to bounce back up
Fortunately for me my motivation came from everyone I know who doubted I could make something of myself. I let that anger I had for it fuel me to a point of wanting revenge. And I know the best revenge to me is continued success, so I got up and started working. I worked 2 jobs, saved as much as I could to get back on my feet and then start funding my investment portfolio, which in turn funded the current businesses I own now!
