We recently connected with Jamika Render and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamika , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My journey in design started in college when I began experimenting with Microsoft Word products. However, it wasn’t until I discovered tools like Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud that I realized the endless possibilities of design. As I continued to explore and grow my skills, I also became an expert in various platforms like Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy, and WordPress.
My passion for interior design dates back to high school when I begged my mom to let me redecorate my bedroom. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to choose every detail and layout myself when I moved into my first apartment in 2020. But it wasn’t until 2021 when I took on a marketing management role, that my creativity soared to new heights. With more websites and graphics to create, I poured my creativity into designing home decor items and even launched my own line of products. Initially, a portion of the proceeds went towards donating mental health and wellness journals to youth in transition shelters through my nonprofit. Today, I am focused on growing my business to train and hire those youth.
However, I didn’t want to stop at just creating designs. I wanted to truly master my skills. In 2021, I dedicated myself to the process of mastery and enrolled in UX design courses, learned how to code, studied Adobe Creative Cloud products, and took one-off interior design courses. It was a challenging but immensely rewarding journey, and I’m excited to keep learning and growing. In my mastery, I’ve been fortunate to add the platforms Figma and Bubble to my skill set. I continue to hone my interior design skills every day through an online platform exclusively for designers. I connect with other designers, we bounce ideas off of each other, and we even partner on projects.
In addition to my design work, coaching and consulting comes naturally to me. I love helping clients solve business puzzles and concepts that they’ve been struggling with for weeks or months. It brings me great joy to see my clients happy and empowered with a solid plan or concept after our coaching sessions.
Overall, my journey as a designer and coachsultant has been one of continuous learning, growth, and dedication to honing my skills. I’m passionate about creating beautiful designs and helping clients bring their visions to life. I’m excited to see what opportunities lie ahead in my creative journey!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m the founder and lead coachsultant of JLR & Co., a multi-faceted design and coachsulting business. We focus on purposeful design and designing with purpose. I’ve been passionate about graphic design since I was in fifth grade and created my first presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint. Fast forward to today, and I’ve got over five years of professional experience in graphic and web design, and I’ve worked with all sorts of clients, including well-known brands, startups, small businesses, and nonprofits.
I’m also a bit of an interior design enthusiast, and I love treating spaces like blank canvases and experimenting with textures, colors, patterns, and styles to create unique and personalized designs. While I’m still in the early stages of my interior design journey, I’ve had the opportunity to design small spaces and offices, and I’ve even volunteered with Atlanta Home Magazine to learn from some of the city’s most renowned designers, contractors, landscapers, and tile experts.
At JLR & Co., I take pride in offering my clients a hassle-free experience. As a coachsultant, I understand how valuable your time is, so I always work quickly and efficiently to deliver top-quality design services. Whether you’re a small business owner looking to expand your reach or a family trying to make more time for each other, I’m here to help you achieve your design and consulting goals.
Through my work, I’ve discovered the many purposes of a well-planned and executed design, and it has helped me discover my own purpose. Whenever I branch out and take risks, I trust in God, and he always provides what I need to succeed.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a creative, I find the most rewarding aspect to be the journey of the creative process itself and the fact that I get to serve others in what I consider my God-given purpose. I’ve always been called a servant leader and the fact that I get to be a servant leader in the creative design space blows my mind every day!
It’s a fulfilling experience to see a project evolve from an empty canvas to a final product, whether it’s a website, a flyer, or an interior space. I love how every project starts with a clean slate and gradually takes form through a series of steps, ultimately leading to a successful outcome for business owners or a personalized space that creates a sense of nostalgia and joy. I thank God every day for my gifts and the beauty that I get to design.
It’s heartwarming to see the smile on an entrepreneur’s face when their business idea or event comes to life. Knowing that my creative work has contributed to their success brings a sense of satisfaction that’s hard to describe. Overall, witnessing the evolution of the creative process and seeing the positive impact it has on my clients is truly rewarding and keeps me motivated to keep creating.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s been a journey of unlearning for me, as I’ve had to let go of the belief that my past experiences would hold me back. I’ve had to unlearn the lesson that my trauma defined me and instead embrace the idea that it was a part of my story but not my entire narrative. This shift in mindset has allowed me to approach opportunities with a newfound sense of confidence and curiosity.
Through my experiences, I’ve learned that unlearning can be just as important as learning. It’s about challenging the assumptions and beliefs we hold onto and being open to new perspectives and experiences. Unlearning can be uncomfortable and challenging, but it’s necessary for growth and progress. By letting go of limiting beliefs and embracing new opportunities, we can achieve our full potential and make a positive impact on the world.
