We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamika Clark. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamika below.
Alright, Tamika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
YouTube and Instagram were my biggest learning tools when it came to curating a balloon business. I practiced the craft daily, discovered new techniques, and enrolled in classes offered by some of the industry’s biggest balloon artists. Knowing what I know now, there is nothing that I could have done to speed up my learning process. I was interested and dedicated to the craft so being consistent with social media platforms allowed me to learn the industry quickly. I think the skills that are most essential for this industry are creativity, consistency, knowledge of products, and confidence. Thankfully there were no obstacles that stood in my way of learning more. I have a great support system that constantly pushes me to learn more by having me try something that I have never done before and allowing me to have creative freedom when it comes to their events.

Tamika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tamika Clark. I am from the Hampton Roads area and I come from a family of creatives and artists. I have always been crafty and loved using my hands to create things. I got into the balloon industry during the pandemic after a good friend helped to decorate my birthday party with balloon arches from Michaels. Following my birthday I decorated for close friends and family parties during the pandemic which then turned into a friend commissioning me to do a balloon arch which in turn created my business. I offer custom balloon creations and more for all events serving Richmond and surrounding areas as well as the Hampton Roads area. I assist clients with décor ideas and design. I think what sets me apart from others is my creativity and professionalism. I am most proud of my ability to evolve and the dedication that I have to this craft. I want clients to know that this is not just a paycheck for me but something that I love and enjoy doing. I love to bring the client’s vision to life. I believe that every celebration is supposed to be joyous and rememberable and I strive to bring that with every service that I provide.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
When I first started my business it really came out of nowhere and now I have future goals and expansion for my business. Currently, I have the goal of stepping into the event industry and not just strictly in the balloon industry. I would love to own a venue space, rent out party equipment, and also become a seller of high-quality balloons.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Life to me involves constant pivots. In 2017 I lost my mother suddenly and had to learn and continue to learn to navigate life without her. It’s hard losing your biggest cheerleader. She was my best friend. She constantly poured into me to be great, follow my heart, and to live life to the fullest! My career path has definitely pivoted over the years from wanting to be a Dental Hygienist, working in the mental health field, going back to the dentistry field, receiving my MBA and working within project management, and now having a business, So there have been many pivots in my life and career. While things may pivot in life or within your career or business, I think it is important to know that pivoting is not failing but an opportunity to re-discover yourself and grow.
