We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Early in my career, I was doing what I call “The Fitness Hustle” working 70+ hours a week teaching fitness classes and training clients and running a university fitness center. After getting to a point of complete burnout, I started making small changes to create more time, energy and eventually quit all my in-person jobs to work on JillFit full time. This felt like a huge risk at the time, considering I was not making dollar-for-dollar online as I was in my full-time job. But within the first 12 months online at JillFit, I tripled my income and haven’t looked back since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
JillFit started out as a daily fitness and nutrition blog back in 2010, when I was a full-time personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Armed with an ACSM personal training certification and a Masters degree in Nutrition, I’d get home late from the gym and stay up all night blogging. I also slowly took on 1:1 fat loss coaching clients. Fast forward 18 months and JillFit had grown to a 6-figure online fitness brand with 5 fat loss coaches and over 100 virtual clients! Over the next few years, I developed my own nutrition philosophy, #Moderation365 to automate consistent and healthy eating habits. Since then JillFit has helped over 10,000 women do the same using this method (we now certify coaches in#Moderation365 as well)! After investing in my very first business coach in 2012, I quit all my in-person training and moved fully online. Followers and other professionals began asking me how I was doing what I was doing, and as a result, I started sharing business tips, tools and strategies. That same year I launched my first business mentorship, Best of You Business and did my first 5-figure launch.Since then, JillFit has grossed over 6M in revenue and more importantly, we’ve helped thousands of health, fitness and nutrition professionals start and grow their online businesses so they can quit their 9-to-5s and create the time freedom, autonomy and fulfilling careers they’ve always dreamed of.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As someone who started out as a blogger and developed a personal brand, I recommend first starting out with “attraction content” on social media and/or podcasts and videos to connect with your ideal clients (their struggles/frustrations and the success they want to create). Once we’re connected online, I’d create high-value content to entice them to go deeper with your brand via email marketing or SMS. This is where you deploy “nurture content” that connects and brings them closer to the sale via free content and low-risk wins. This content should speak your customer’s language, connect with their pain points and problems and create solutions that speak to those things. Finally and at some point, you have to invite them to work with you. At JillFit, we run live launches (open + closed cart) every couple months and fill our coaching containers at that way.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back in 2018 we retired a program that was very lucrative for us. It was very hard! But after some market research, we were horrified to learn that only 15% of customers were actually finishing the program. We could not continue to promote this program and stay in our integrity because we knew if they did not finish the program, they would not get results. We created a brand, new business-building program for fitness pros called as Fitness Business Accerlerator to include more accountability, support, more “face time” with me and because of all those changes, we went from a 15% compliance rate to 83%. And our clients are getting incredible results all around.
