We were lucky to catch up with James Moffitt recently and have shared our conversation below.
James, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
One of the things that TrailHead does that’s different from the industry standard is a focus on long-form, value-driven storytelling. I think there’s massive pressure in content creation circles to constantly be ‘on trend’ and chase the next hot viral thing. In my opinion, following trends actually cheapens your brand. There’s no substance, you’re just part of the wave of noise continually burning people out on social media and brand content day after day.
Instead, we focus on telling real stories that have meaning and that have an impact on the community. No matter what the line of business is, our clients have a community that surrounds them. They are part of that discourse. We work to make adding meaningful contributions to that discourse, adding value and educating the consumer our priority when building content plans for them.
What you won’t see from this methodology is 10k new followers overnight from the latest TikTok dance. What you will see, however, is steady growth and your brand carving out a niche for itself in the attention economy, and that has lasting benefits.
James, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
How TrailHead Started: TrailHead began in 2020 after years of working in other agencies, freelancing, and as an in-house creative. I wanted to create a space that could host all of my work and develop a voice of its own. I knew that I wanted the agency to focus primarily on the outdoor and conservation space and it just felt like the right time to bring the brand to life. Now, TrailHead functions as a full-service agency and a connection point for other creatives in our greater area that work in the outdoor space.
TrailHead services: TrailHead offers content marketing, branding, strategy, and web services.
What problems TrailHead solves for clients: I think the biggest problem we solve for clients is helping to answer the “what’s next” question. We tend to work with people that are either launching a brand and want to hit the ground running, or brands that feel like they’re plateauing and are ready to take the next step up.
Main things we want people to know: I think the most important thing people should know, or maybe expect from TrailHead overall is how hands-on and immersive our work relationships are. We love embedding with clients and really walking some miles in their shoes. Doing this allows us to learn their brands inside and out and really begin to distill out stories that are worth telling.
What we are most proud of: One of the things I’m personally most proud of with TrailHead is our commitment to non-profit and social good work. We are an ethics-driven organization and we try to act accordingly. This means we won’t work with clients that clash with our values and we dedicate, on average, 30% of our yearly workload to non-profits.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of our main goals is to tell stories that resonate with other people. Really, getting a story out into the world is just the first step. We measure success by watching analytics and seeing how people engage. Seeing a story or a piece of content come to life, spur conversation and get people to engage with it or with the brand is a driving factor in everything we do from a content creation standpoint.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the two biggest things that have built our reputation in the market are how we work and how we treat people. Our ethic is simple: to be impeccable in our work. We’re not always right, or perfect, and we know that there are dozens of people out there that are doing something better every day, but we strive to make everything that we have control over as complete and perfect as possible.
Our second goal is to treat people like people. We build lasting friendships and relationships with most of our clients. Being a human, and a nice person first, matters. We treat people with respect. We care about them and we work to treat our clients as partners.
