We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dominique , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?

My mission is solely to make every female i can, (and male) feel the true beauty within themselves. As a makeup artist, i feel like it’s my duty to make you feel on top of the world. There’s no better feeling than looking just how you feel and that’s amazing!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My Name Is Dominique Murphy Watson. I am 27 years old and Make up is my form of art. I currently work from home as a freelance make up artist. I travel for large groups,weddings,etc. At MilanDMakeOver LLC, I am dedicated to making you look and feel amazing. I have been into make up since 2016 but just recently year 2020 , I have dedicated my career to bringing out the inner beauty in all of my clients. Makeup is more than just colors to me. It’s a chance for people to step out of their every day into something wonderful. I offer a variety of service from natural glams to full glams and even dibble and dabble in hair sometimes.

I got into my business just off of the reactions i received from doing my own makeup. I had no idea that it was possible for me to make others feel the same way. But like i said, the reactions are priceless and that’s what i do it for. Some people actually can’t believe it’s possible for them to look or feel that beautiful. From acne, to forever scars.., broken noses .. there are so many things that can make a woman feel not as beautiful as they once did. That is where i come in , to show you that anything is possible.

I’m mostly proud of how far i came. I started my business in 2020 off of unemployment during the pandemic. I went from 1 client to 300 in 3 years and those do not include the side bookings. Solely off my website. Anything is possible as long as you put your mind to and it do not forget the footwork!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

One of the main lessons i had to learn(still learning) is that things don’t happen when you want them to. Patience is truly a virtue. When it comes to being a business owner, you have to learn to be okay with the fact that some days will be better than most. When you first start a business, you don’t really see anything the first couple of years. It takes some time to get your business flowing and consistently off the ground up, especially when you are doing it all by your self. There were times i would get so frustrated because i seen little to no clients one week. But the following week or so, i can have 7 bookings in one day. So it’s all about patience and knowing that things will work out in your favor. remaining positive can be hard but well worth it in the end.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

I built my audience on social media by using my Handles as portfolios for my work. As well as being consistent in what i post. Wether it’s making reels, TikTok’s and what ever else i needed to put myself out there; like using hashtags. The key here is consistency. Be consistent in engaging with your target audience…sales for an example are a big help for me. Every now and then i do have a sale depending on what zodiac season we are in. Or for proms, weddings, graduations. Any special events. Word of mouth goes a long way! Never ever stop putting yourself out there.
