We recently connected with Nigel Alfred and have shared our conversation below.
Nigel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve been involved in the Carnival culture since a child. Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, Carnival was a way of life. When I moved to the States, Carnival still was a way of life in New York and Miami. Carnival wasn’t escaping me! Of course, I enjoyed the culture of Carnival, but there was more I wanted to do to ensure the culture never died in South Florida. I wanted people outside the Caribbean to know and love Carnival. I wanted my children to know and love their culture, so I finally became involved with the administration and production of the Miami Broward Carnival.
So after years of working with One Island Band as a consultant and section leader, listening to masqueraders’ ideas and complaints, working behind the operational scenes, and administrative and production of carnival, the idea of creating an app became a dream.
I quickly understood that we needed to evolve as the culture constantly grew. We’re in an era where people aren’t walking around with paper maps; everyone has smartphones, so add convenience, safety, and information in the palm of everyone’s hands – from masqueraders to vendors, from promoters to band leaders, spectators, and everyone else involved.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2010, I started consulting for my favorite masquerade band in Miami, One Island Body Paint Band. I started meeting with the various band leaders and the Carnival committee on their behalf. Outside of that, I worked as an Accountant for Andersen, formally known as Arthur Andersen, and Deloitte and Touche, and eventually opened my own tax franchise with Liberty Tax.
Things weren’t easy in the beginning. There was an association that was dormant for years that I could restructure with the help of various band leaders. I became the President of South Florida’s Band Leaders Association, and we eventually got everyone on one accord, which was to grow the Carnival and improve the process.
I had big plans. I wanted to evolve with the culture and expand it to everyone. I wanted to share my culture with the world, not just the West Indies. One way to grow is through technology. It makes the world much smaller and more connected. The app was a perfect way to accomplish this.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help people. I thrive on solving problems. I don’t believe in dwelling on all the bad that’s going on. I saw a need to solve a problem, so that’s how the app was developed. I wanted it to be something small, but the more I shared it with developers, they made me aware that I had something that would serve a bigger purpose and a bigger goal. The goal was to solve a problem, so here we are!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I haven’t entirely built a reputation in this market yet; I’m new to the tech world; however, I’ve always been a good listener and problem solver. I hope that listening, solving issues, and providing great customer service, these skills will help with this new tech startup company.
