We recently connected with Destry Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Destry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Being an artist in itself is one of the greatest risks a person could ever take. From showing talent to an unlimited amount of critics, the money needed to invest in yourself because you believe in yourself, to the experiences with all different kinds of personalities. The lost goes on. All for that huge question that we are start out with……WHAT IF IT DOESNT WORK OUT?! Now all that stuff just seems like you’ve wasted a lot of time. Like you took the wrong path when you came to that fork in the road. I’ve always felt like I am meant to be something more in this world. Creating music is my zen. My peace. My joy. My therapy. That’s why I decided to take the risk. To bring happiness to the world through my creations.

Destry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised on the west side of Chicago. Large family. Athlete. Watching and listening to my older family, I grew an interest in doing music. Well, back then, my focus was just “rapping.” Right from the jump, I had the discipline to go at it like I needed to. Always writing, always listening to beats, always stayed in the studio. As I grew, I developed my own ear. Different sounds caught my attention. My creativity got very experimental. And now you have today, what I call “New Bop.” It’s the sound that I give the music I create. It’s a very unique and distinctive sound. Pair that with my performances, I’m something to see.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had learned the business part of the industry sooner.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Experiencing how people feel from what I’ve created.
