We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Esther Brister a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Esther, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When I was 9, my mom became a widow.
She was an immigrant from Korea, lost both her parents at a young age, journeyed to America to marry my dad, learned English when she could, helped my grandparents’ grocery store business, lost her husband, raised 3 kids on her own, and is now living life to the fullest, surrounded by a beautiful community.
What did my mom do right?
She taught me that despite all that life throws at you, you can still stand strong and flourish.
Her whole life is the definition of resilience, strength, and tenacity. She didn’t let life’s challenges destroy her. Instead, she chose to pivot and persevere, time and time again.
Because of the way she’s lived and the decisions she’s made, she’s shown me that I too can stand strong and flourish.
Thank you, Umma.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi! I’m Esther Brister, and I’m a licensed esthetician serving the greater North Dallas areas. From being a music therapist, a creative director, to now, a skin therapist, I have had a very fulfilling career. At my business, Skin Revival Studio, we revive skin and restore lives.
Everything we do is to heal and revitalize you and your skin, inside and out. It’s not just about physically healing skin, but also bringing healing, rest, and care to each person so that when they leave, they leave feeling better when they came in. And along the way, we help you become the most confident in your own skin!
Many clients have enjoyed our in-depth consultations, where we talk about multiple lifestyle factors that contribute to skin health. From there, we create customized treatment plans and give homecare recommendations to help clients reach their specific skin goals.
We offer a range of facial treatments including: bespoke facials, chemical peels, age management facial treatments, and, our favorite, Acne Bootcamp, which, on average, helps clear acne within 3-4 months!
Our facial massage and various massage/lymphatic drainage modalities have also been a fan-favorite, as they’re not only relaxation-inducing but also results-driven.
As skin is our largest organ, skincare is healthcare. And Skin Revival is grateful to provide much needed self-care and skincare to Dallas.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Starting my Instagram account during esthetics school played a massive role in growing my clientele!
Because I’ve had social media marketing experience in the past, I knew that I needed to stick to a posting schedule and stay consistent with it for a long period of time once I started.
I spent a lot of time gathering content during my classes, especially when we learned new facials, and as I started seeing clients at school, I would get consent from them to take content during their services. Any time I would learn new information about products or ingredients, I would create graphics to educate my audience.
Finding hashtags relevant to my ideal audience, being intentional with my copy, as well as simply maintaining consistency in posting throughout my schooling played a huge role in growing my clientele.
As I’ve opened my practice and started seeing clients, I’ve had several tell me that they found me while I was still in school (both locally and out-of-state!), as well as on the explore page.
From my experience, committing to a posting plan and starting early in my career have made a great impact in growing my clientele through social media.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Getting into esthetics was actually one of the biggest pivots I’ve had to make in my career thus far!
In my previous job, I oversaw multiple departments, led teams, managed several reoccurring annual projects, and created a space where people could connect with others. I felt I was in my element and loved the work I was doing and the community I served.
The sad thing is is that my work environment was very toxic and not one that I wanted to be in anymore. Once I came to that painful realization, I knew I had to make a shift.
Leaving a job that was incredibly fulfilling and touched on many of my strengths was a very difficult decision to make. But ultimately, the health of my heart and mind and the well-being of my family was more of a priority over loyalty and no real promise of change.
I had been thinking of becoming an esthetician for about 3 years, and when I knew that I had to pivot, I knew that entering into esthetics was my next career move.
Was it scary? Yes. Did I know I would be successful? Absolutely not!
This was a total leap of faith!
But my desire to leave toxicity and create my own space of healing, health, and care for others was greater than staying in an unhealthy environment, and I was determined to give this dream a chance.
