Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joseph Trefry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Joseph, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?

I am incredibly grateful for my parents, Michael and Amanda Trefry, who have always been a constant source of love, support, and guidance in my life. They prioritized our family’s well-being, creating a home filled with warmth, love, and a sense of belonging. No matter what challenges we faced, they were there to provide unwavering support and ensure that we felt safe and cared for.
Along with their focus on family, my parents instilled a strong work ethic in me, emphasizing the importance of hard work, perseverance, and pursuing my dreams. They supported me in all of my endeavors, from helping me with homework to cheering me on at sporting events.
But it’s the small things that have had the most significant impact on me. My parents taught me the value of being kind and helpful to strangers, going above and beyond for loved ones, keeping my promises, making ethical choices, and never giving up. These values have guided me both personally and professionally, inspiring me to approach life with integrity and compassion.
Overall, my parents’ unwavering support and guidance have had a profound impact on my life and career, and I am forever grateful for everything they have done for me. While I can never fully repay them, I hope to honor their legacy by living a life that reflects the values they instilled in me and by making a positive impact in the world, just as they have done for me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Joseph Trefry, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the lead designer at Next Step Innovations. Currently, I am based in beautiful Boulder, CO, where I reside with my lovely fiancé, Carsen, and our two adorable kitties, Tofu and Benny. When I’m not working, I enjoy engaging in a variety of activities, including playing pickleball (you should definitely try it!), golfing, snowboarding, cooking, reading, and playing video games with my younger brother, who is located in Colorado Springs. In my free time, I also have a passion for up-and-coming technologies, visual and audible art forms, indulging in delicious plant-based foods, and exploring new destinations around the world. People often ask me how I ended up in the home remodeling industry, and it always makes me chuckle. Unlike many others, I didn’t grow up with a family background in remodeling or always dream of becoming a designer. In fact, I was studying psychology when I decided to take a break from school and travel around Europe with my friend Jonas, a foreign exchange student. Upon returning to Denver, I realized the high cost of living and needed to find a job with upward mobility. That’s when I responded to a Craigslist ad and was hired as the assistant manager for a newly opened home remodeling showroom. With time, I taught myself how to design using 2020 Design Software and gained valuable experience in the industry.
Now, I am proud to be part of Next Step Innovations, a unique home remodeling company that offers exceptional services to clients in the Denver Metro area. We are the parent company to Next Step Landscaping and SOL Window Coverings, and specialize in kitchen, bathroom, and basement renovations. Our work has been featured in Colorado’s Best Kitchens magazine, and we take great pride in delivering outstanding results that exceed our clients’ expectations.
As the spatial designer at Next Step Innovations, I am responsible for creating the layout of each space, meeting with clients to understand their goals and needs, and bringing their vision to life. I am passionate about helping my clients achieve their desired outcome, and I love the challenge of creating custom solutions that meet their unique needs. Nothing brings me more joy than hearing how thrilled our clients are with their newly remodeled space and seeing the stunning photos captured by our talented photographer, Robin.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.

I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel Barraza, my business partner, while working as a designer at J&K Cabinetry, a wholesale cabinet supplier. Daniel’s original designer had retired and one day he approached me to collaborate on a design project. We achieved great success on that project, and he decided to work with me on all of his upcoming projects. Eventually, I was promoted to office manager at J&K Cabinetry. It was around this time that Danny proposed the idea of opening a home remodeling showroom together. While I initially declined his offer, I soon realized that my time with J&K Cabinetry was limited, and I reached back out to Danny to see if the opportunity was still available. He responded positively, and we began planning for the future of Next Step Innovations in the home remodeling space.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Our company has been fortunate to receive a steady stream of new clients through referrals. These referrals come from our satisfied past clientele as well as from our amazing BNI group, Six Degree Connections. Additionally, we have been honored to have people seek us out after seeing our work featured in Colorado’s Best Kitchens magazine. We are thrilled to have such a strong network of support and recognition, and we look forward to continuing to provide exceptional home remodeling services to our clients.
