We were lucky to catch up with Emily Dewberry recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
When it comes to the health wellness and spirituality space, there is always bus words that are continuing to come up! Right now, the buzz words are breathwork and nervous system regulation. This trend just like many before make me very cautiously excited on how we are continuing to support ourselves internally and externally.
One positive thing that has come from the pandemic is that people are looking to support their overall health, especially mental health and wellness. As we continue to learn more about the body, brain, and energetics, the more we have realized how connected everything is. The nervous system is what runs our fight or flight response, which is directly connected with how we deal with daily stress and anxiety. It’s even more fascinating that the breath itself is what directly controls the nervous system.
What makes me so cautiously excited about this trend is that breathwork is an incredibly powerful tool but can be a dangerous one when a facilitator has minimal training. Breathwork lead in a safe space can change your life, breathwork lead unregulated can potentially cause more trauma to the body and mind.
Breathwork for me, is a tool that needs to be led by a facilitator who understands a holistic view of the science of breath as well as the energetics behind the breath. That is something that I am very passionate about teaching and sharing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there! If we haven’t met before my name is Emily Dewberry, I am a Dallas native certified breathwork and meditation teacher, intuitive tarot reader and teacher, holy fire reiki master teacher, mat pilates and EYRT yoga instructor. If you can tell I do quite a lot in the health, wellness, and spirituality space, truly I feel like I’ve received a personal masters in wellness of the mind, body, and soul over the last few years.
I hold certifications under many schools of thoughts when it comes to breathwork and meditation from Jon Paul Crimi in California, The Academy of Breath, Frequency Breathwork in New York, and several studios in Dallas just to name a few. Breathwork and Meditation is my first love, it truly saved my life in a time where I was looking for healing and I am honored to be a teacher of the modality now. In 2020 my life looked very different, I was living in Houston working for the largest catering company in event design. I loved working events, from large cooperate events and weddings to social events I was living a dream of what I thought I wanted in life, but knowing deep down I wasn’t truly fulfilled.
In March the pandemic hit and my world fell apart and within six weeks I was unemployed, single, and moving back home. Truly something I was never anticipating. I have a christian background and I like to say that God brought me the modalities I now teach because In the three months following the pandemic I was lost, trying to find some guidance on what I should do next. One thing lead to another and I found myself signing up for my first training in breathwork and meditation which then and lead me down a three year path of discovery, finding myself once again and these modalities truly coming to me in the most unexpected ways. I am a believer that there is no coincidences.
I quickly realized after my first training that breathwork and meditation were never something I came across and these tools could’ve really helped me when I was working in corporate America so I took it upon myself to launch my own private practice to help anyone who was open and willing to receive these tools.
In January 2021, I launched The Embody Edit, an education platform and private practice where I am deeply passionate about breaking the stereotypes of “woo woo” or new age spiritually labeled practices like breathwork, meditation, tarot, and reiki. Bringing these practices mainstream and into everyones day to day practice. Eventually this practice lead me to launching a mobile app with the apple app store and has allowed me to work with companies like Dallasites 101, John Reed Fitness, Alo Yoga and more.
Breathwork and Meditation being the core of my practices yet over the past few years I have added energetic and intuitive modalities like reiki and tarot as well physical movement modalities like mat pilates and vinyasa yoga. But what I think sets me apart from most is that I don’t come from this world originally, I have a corporate background yet have connected these practices so deeply that I want to continue to share what has changed my life with others in a way that is attainable for the person I was several years ago.
My goal with every client, every class, workshop, etc is making the modalities attainable, releasing the stigma of what people think they are. Truly breaking the potential weirdness that people may view some of these modalities are and that its only for one specific type of person. I love being able to connect with clients and seeing how these modalities can help shift their mental, emotional and physical health so that they can live their passions and dreams they have for themselves. If I can help be a catalyst for them, then I believe I’ve done my job.
I currently reside in Dallas and teach in person at serval studios in town and teach online breathwork, tarot, and reiki sessions with my online platform. In October of 2021, I also created an intentional jewelry line, Ripple, which is handcrafted reiki infused crystal jewelry. Ripple is sold online and in select local stores in Dallas with the intention to create a ripple effect in your own daily life as well as others by giving a percentage of every sale to help various mental health awareness initiatives around the world.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Although my market is primarily in the DFW area, I feel very strongly about the reputation I have built with in my community and my clients. I am a firm believer of having a holistic view of the practices that I teach from the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of what I teach. As I’ve grown in my own practices and shared them with others, the more importance of I’ve placed on education, learning from the best of the teachers in the trade in multiple different schools of thought and ideas. From learning the science behind why and how our body reacts and responds, to the energetics behind the practices I teach helps me to share how our body, mind, and emotions are all connected to our day to day lifestyle and choices.
It is very important for me to have a safe and nurturing environment so that these modalities I work with can shine with my community. Because in these modalities that they teach in order for them to be so successful, and to connect with a wide variety of people, they have to feel safe and cared for. Time and time again I hear clients tell me how they have worked with these modalities and did not feel safe and I feel a strong obligation to help support these clients in a nurturing environment so they can share their truth, shine, and heal.
I also believe there is so much power in meeting people where they are at and I think that’s what stands me apart from many practitioners in the space. I leave space for people to push and challenge themselves and give permission to others to give themselves what they need. I give my clients what I would want if I had a teacher prior to me entering this space. From breaking stigmas and normalizing practices that may seem overwhelming or difficult to understand my hope is to continue allowing my community and those that find me to receive whatever they are needing through these modalities.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
First, I believe the most powerful resource for anything, especially entrepreneurial is within you. If you close your eyes down, take a few big deep breath’s you can ask yourself any yes or no question or even an open ended question and receive an answer that is best for you, so before you start looking out word I believe that building a daily practice of coming back within yourself can be the biggest benefit to any where you’re going.
If you’re new to the space and looking for resources, my all-time favorite place to start is Breath by James Nestor. It is an incredible resource for breathwork meditation and overall science of well-being. Next, I am the type of person that has 10-15 books on my reading list and some of my most favorite books I continue to go back to is any of Breanna Wiest. From The Mountain is You, 101 Essays that will Change the Way You Think, to her newest book Ceremony. Her books are the ones I continually go back to you for inspiration for meditations, as well as internal and external guidance.
I would also say that Joe Dispenza’s meditations and books from Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, Becoming Supernatural, to You Are the Placebo has had a huge impact on how I perceive so much within myself, within the science of these tools I practice and teach, and the overall industry itself.
