We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Makayla King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Makayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I once took a $650 lace closure class that was LOOK & LEARN. never again. this was years ago so $650 got a class was alot to not be hands on. I walked away with so many unanswered questions because i am a hands on person.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Wife, Mother and eldest of 4 girls. I absolutely love concerts, live music, traveling and SEAFOOD! My family has over 15 hairstylist and barbers so I guess you can say it’s in the blood. Doing hair has come naturally just like having professionalism. I am naturally a helpful and people person. I love to meet new people and being a hairstylist allows me to meet people from all walks of life and learn so many cool things. Alot of stylist tend to get a bad name for not being personable, late all the time, doing inappropriate things overbooking etc. I pride myself in not making any of these things habit. Everyone who sits in my chair leaves feeling special, with proper hair knowledge of home care and even with a few laughs. It’s one thing to know how to do hair, it’s another to put love and care into every head you touch.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I am a believer in using all resources to push my business forward. This includes applying for various grants. I have ran into many roadblocks while trying to apply for grants due to many not being available to hairstylist and barbers. Most are for scientific research, global warming cures, health related education related etc. Seeing that it takes a while to build up ones credit to a point where they qualify for business loans and things of that nature, it would be nice to have access to “free” money like grants to push our business to the next level.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Learn when to give freebies and when not to. I don’t want to go into a long drawn-out story but i have experienced giving free services in exchange for “exposure”, The exposure i thought I would receive, sometimes it was beneficial but most times, I was just being used. Knowing when to decipher the two is very important!
